The (Web) Updated to 4.81.1 is inaccurate as it should be (Web) Updated to 4.51.1. I guess someone rushed the update out

Coming here to wonder the same thing… Interesting

They just posted the release notes on the forum, with slightly different wording, interestingly:

  • (Gaming) Retro Games with Plex Arcade sub (MacOS and Windows)

Techcrunch: Plex launches a subscription-based retro game streaming service, ‘Plex Arcade’

Ah, here’s the page we’re looking for

So they want $3-$5 a month to play 30 year old games that have been emulated on practically every OS already? Yup, this seems like time well spent…

Could be a nice solution for TV and iOS users. Plus, if there’s a wide variety of games you want to play, you don’t need to install a whole host of emulators on any devices you want to use it with. If you want to play on multiple devices, you don’t need to worry about save syncing.

It’s not for everyone, but there definitely are advantages!

I see it’s not available on Linux, thank god

Anyhow, as long as it can be disabled so it does not appear on my server/clients then good luck to them.

Seems like a very odd move to me but they must feel there is some market for it!

Was exactly my thought also. This feature/suggestion must have got most votes - I guess :man_shrugging:

It actually comes out of Plex Labs. Check the TechCrunch article: https://techcrunch.com/2021/01/26/plex-launches-a-subscription-based-retro-game-streaming-service-plex-arcade/

I can’t help but be reminded of Game Room on 360. It was a stellar implementation of a virtual arcade with horrible old games that no-one cared about. It broke my heart to see it die due to a mostly terrible game library. The fact that they made the buying process difficult didn’t help much, but even though I’m a life-long gamer, I just can’t bring myself to care about Atari games - and I don’t even see any of the Atari titles I’d be slightly tempted by. Perhaps I could be swayed by a few of the arcade titles, but mostly out of academic curiosity. I’m glad to hear it was mostly free in terms of development, and if they see success, that’s great. But I don’t see the point of a subscription. Make it ad-supported and I might give it a go now and then. Or add late 80s arcade games onwards and you begin to catch my attention.

I loved the trailer, though. A+ for style.

You can add whatever ROMs you want, as well as a variety of emulators, including NES, SNES, N64, GBA/C, Game Gear, and Genesis. Vanstinator’s Core Manager makes installing those quite easy, but I believe it can also work with ones that aren’t included there? Not sure about that.

Bring it to the PS4 app and I’ll pay double.

Umm, nice idea, but subscription on top of the plex pass and only on windows/mac servers? skip this me thinks.

I would assume they intend to bring it to Linux etc.

  • Plex Media Server version 1.21.2 or newer (running on Windows or macOS; Linux, NAS, and NVIDIA SHIELD are not currently supported, sorry)

That being said, the fee is kind of stupid, in a way. I’m cool paying but my shared out users probably won’t. I’d suggest something akin to $3/month just for you or $15 /month to share it out to friends.

@ChuckPa @BigWheel (sorry for the direct call outs) but can you confirm intentions on porting to *nix platforms in the future ?

Also, would have been nice to get a bit more warning on the free trial setup to indicate you have to run a windows / mac server.

I’ve subscribed for a 7 day trial, to write a review for my website (which is about video games), but it seems not compatible with Synology NAS. (1st fail)
No information about using our own emulators (and why we should pay to use our own stuff ? 2nd fail).
Subscription is separate from the plex pass price. (3rd fail)

All of that together, it will be a solid “no no” to me.

Wasted my free trial since the Windows/MacOS server requirements are hidden in the FAQ and not on the main page where you subscribe.

Yup. As a user who runs a completely dockerized Plex system, the decision to launch without Linux support is absurd. I’ll be cancelling my trial immediately.
