I’m excited for this new Plex Arcade feature, but I do have some questions like:
How will the Game Saves work through the different accounts on the Plex Server
Which retro game platforms are supported
Will it be possible to play these games through the Plex apps on Xbox One/Series X|S and/or Android TVs
When you try to play the retro games on the Plex app on a game console like Xbox or Playstation, will the app then just accept the current Xbox/Playstation controller you’re using?
I wouldn’t count on it.
They removed other Rom-Players from their store.
Just to get this out of the way, I feel the consoles have approximately a 0% chance of allowing this on their Plex apps, possibly lower. Android TV is already supposed to be supported, and at least on Series X you could spend $20 and install Retroarch if you don’t mind rebooting into developer mode.
That said, this is a bit different than the usual ROM apps. Most app stores have very strict rules about running external third-party binaries for security reasons, but if the app limits the ROMs to ones that are packaged with the app they’re generally fine. Plex Arcade is already available on iOS, and Apple’s generally pretty tight about emulators too.
Because Plex Arcade is just playing a video stream it solves the security issue, so then it’s just down to platform philosophy on technically legal gray-area apps, how much it impacts their business model, and if current publishers threaten to pull games from the platform if Plex Arcade is allowed on. Microsoft is least threatened by these emulators currently, but Sony and Nintendo both have huge chunks of their libraries that are best played on a libretro emulator. Not that there’s a Plex app for Switch anyway…
I’m annoyed because I’m actually interested in this, but my TV Plex platforms are all PlayStation or Roku TV, and I’m not sure Roku TV is set up to handle a proper controller. I’m not much of a mobile gamer, so I’m left considering a monthly subscription fee for a curiosity to tinker with on my phone.
You can use a Xbox controller for Fire stick and play that way. And 0 chance that any consoles will get it due to the fact that Nintendo is quick to sue lol
