Plex ATSC 3.0 Tuner Support

I wish there were some way to use my LGs internal tuner along with my Plex and HDHomeRun, for both its speed and, in my case, it’s seems to have a stronger and more stable signal than my HDHomeRun. I have to split the coax, one to TV one to Homerun.

A point to consider is that the HDHR tuner app MUST have a live internet connection to even start. No internet, no viewing anything live or recorded. No, they don’t publish the fact. This is the way SiliconDust designed it. They report that they have a potential fix for the AC-4 issue due to be in beta next week. The internet requirement is on a “wish list” . They claim it is for EPG data and for the UI “experience”. I’m not sure why the guide data is not cached and my UI doesn’t appear to ever change.

Personally, one reason I maintain OTA capabilities is for information in case of an emergency. I watch local TV to stay informed of severe weather developments. During this severe weather is exactly when my internet is most likely to go down. With an internal tuner you have a “Plan B” to stay aware. With only an HDHR tuner and app you are SOL.

I discovered this during the HDHR server issues on 26NOV when every single HDHR customer was unable to view anything for about 12 hours despite having the recording or a solid OTA signal right there in their house and multiple tuners. I am not a happy camper.

I’m researching and testing different software currently to see about the different issues. Plex is high on my list so far. I don’t expect any 3rd party software to be able to access the HDHR HDD so that is just lost money. Plex doesn’t support ATSC 3.0 (AC-4) currently. At this point I regret spending extra on the HDHR Scribe.

Seems like most people who ugrade are looking for the cutting edge sound and resolution. I’m happy with 1080. Maybe my eyes aren’t good enough to see the advantage of 4k.

I’m really more interested if the broadcast reception is less iffy with ATSC3. Now if it’s windy or raining my picture will likely cut out. I live in nw Oregon, so rain is an issue.

Can anyone offer an opinion if the new standard is more reliable in bad weather.

Add me to the list! Got a 4k hdhomerun. Looking forward to being able to use the channels!

Your eyes may not be good enough to see 4k difference but if you saw it with 3.0, that would be more of a problem because 3.0 is the same image as 1.0 (and the same audio), just using different codecs to encode and send it (note some 1080i stations may be broadcasting at 1080p but the source is still the same). Nothing is broadcast in 4k now and may not be in any regular way until after 1.0 is dropped ~4 years from now.
ATSC 3.0’s broadcast technology (OFDM) is more robust than 1.0 (8-VSB) and has better error correction so may help in situations like you describe were weather is affecting you (assuming it isn’t an issue where your antenna is getting physically moved by the wind). But not the other thing that affects reception quality the most for many people, is that the 3.0 and 1.0 signals are coming from different antennas. Usually there is 1 antenna that is doing all 3.0 broadcasts and many that broadcast the different 1.0 stations. So the 3.0 antenna could be closer or further away from you for a specific channel’s 1.0 broadcast.

I too would like ATSC 3.0 support. It’s gotta happen sooner or later anyway… prefer sooner.

I am very interested in ATSC 3.0 support. I have two HDHomeRun. One is the new flex 4K and other is a Quattro. On the flex the local channels pictures are excellent while most on the Quattro isn’t any good. Lots of pixelation.

I have my new HDHomeRun 4K Flex hooked-up the Tampa Florida Market has 5 HEVC channels, each with very nice and clear picture and no sound in Plex DVR.

The HDHomeRun App has both picture and sound. Is there a way for me to manually add this audio codec to my Plex machine?

With the latest YouTube TV on/off/on of my local ABC, I’ve decided that an OTA DVR will be necessary. I’ll evaluate the HDHomeRun dvr as well as channels app.

It is definitely an upgrade in stability which is why I want Plex to support AC-4. I recently purchased a Flex 4K. I had an older HDHR model before. The newer channels that are ATSC 3.0 come in strong and clear when on my older turner I couldn’t get some of the same channels 1.0 offerings. We’ve had wind and snow and I haven’t lost the picture once during recordings etc (using Emby). I would say it’s a nice improvement in stability.

Thanks very much!

Belatedly, thank you.

Do you know what frequency range the new channels are vs the old channels?

I would say that any change in stability “depends”.

For example, I can receive almost all the ATSC 1.0 OTA channels in my area (Phoenix) with decent stability.

However, almost all my ATSC 3.0 channels are medium-to-poor reception quality with frequent drop-outs. If I had to receive ATSC 3.0 only, I would have to go back to a cable subscription.

It really depends on where the ATSC 3.0 transmitters are located in your city. They aren’t guaranteed to be in the same location as the ATSC 1.0 transmitters for the same OTA channels.
