Plex Broke My Heart, Jellyfin Fixed It

yeah cool. we did that. we ran in to little issues everyday with casting, logging in, finding content, just user things, they had to relearn the UI and then i started having issues with transcoding and subtitles and all that stuff just worked on plex, so i went back to plex.

We’ve never had any of those problems. Jellyfin has fixed a lot of issues and bugs recently. It’s smooth as butter now…

cool. glad you like it. jellyfin isnt for everyone

Question for those trying out Jellyfin while still on Plex. Did you use the same libraries for Jellyfin as you did with Plex? I want to test Jellyfin, but I do not want to mess up my Plex NAS server in the process. Thanks!

Jellyfin and Plex can peacefully coexist while accessing the same media libraries. By default, both services keep their metadata separate and won’t interfere with each other. For extra peace of mind, you can configure Jellyfin as read-only and disable metadata saving to media folders in Jellyfin if you want to keep your directories pristine.

Sweet! Thanks for the info. I’m gonna test JellyFin. I don’t have an issue with complexity but some users of my Plex server might. Glad to hear I can run side by side without issue.

I’ll make a shameless plug for the Scyfin theme – Base + OLED. Looks wonderful and works quite nicely. I have Jellyfin and Plex running on the same machine, pointed at the same mount points for libraries, and using the same tmpfs ram transcode mount (110GB) for transcode duties. Since I’ve moved transcodes off of the same SSD with the DB, things have been FLYING. Give it a whirl.

This looks really, really good.

Thank you very much for sharing this. Looks like a modern approach to UI. What a concept.

I’ve tried quite a few themes over the past few weeks, and this one just seems to check all the boxes for me with almost zero need for customization. Some themes required 5-8 different CSS items to change styling for rounded corners, floating progress bar indicators, top right watched indicator badges etc. Scyfin just has it all baked into Base, and further customizations with sub themes like OLED.

Just add the base line first, then OLED (or any of the other ones) below it, save, refresh the browser. You’re done.

Longtime lifetime plexpass holder here. The recent app changes are going to force my hand in this matter. Since the android app is unusable, I will need to try jellyfin.

Honestly I’m pretty impressed with where Jellyfin is at. HDR is working, Hardware acceleration and improved video scrubbing. It even has plugin support, something that Plex abandoned years ago.

Custom themes and CSS right in the main interface, and the ability to easily add and maintain different metadata providers.

Meanwhile… plex is struggling after years and years and years of user demand to finally add NFO support…

I actually just looked up Plex alternatives yesterday and found Jellyfin because, although I was fine with the new UI, the new app also forces you to update your server, and I refuse to do that because they phased out custom metadata agents a few months back. And without those agents, Plex is useless to me.

Glad to see Jellyfin is working for you, and by the looks of it, there are tools that allow you to transfer all your metadata. I will seriously be considering this move as a long-time Plex Pass Subscriber. What a shame…

Thanks for that tip with Jellyfin!
So, I’m off, plex.

Searches for Jellyfin doubled in the past day according to Google trends. Wonder why that might be?

So I’ve finally began experimenting with Jellyfin, and I’m blown away. If you like to tinker or customize things, or consider yourself a power user, it is a far better experience.

It’s easy to see how Plex became a product for normies, as it slowly began to remove support for plugins, agents, and customization.

May I ask which client app(s) you are using with Jellyfin? I use mostly Apple devices and the situation is not great (for my needs). I mostly use Infuse when it’s necessary to use JF. Unfortunately it doesn’t support live TV, so that’s not ideal.

I can test on Android mobile (tablet, which I already briefly tested) and TV if that’s where the better clients are.

Thanks!

I’m on Android at the house, no iOS devices. I’ve heard Infuse is the way to go but it sounds like Live TV is a deal breaker.

Just passing thru and wanted to add a comment for those like me looking to start a media server. Really new to all this - been wanting to do this for long time. Took dive on 4/28 with plex. Blown away at how easy it was. After using it for a day or 2 - missed the final price on premium. Cost to go premium is a concern so yesterday I set up jellyfin. Had it going in mintues with settings, preferred artwork site, plugins (even lyrics for songs!) It really does rival plex. More homework still but cost will be my deciding factor for now.
