In one room I have an apple tv. The apple tv app and its content works perfectly. The wifi speed at the apple tv box is 150MBPS. Until recently I had plex streaming local media files from my mac to the apple tv via the plex app.
Yesterday plex started buffering during playback, and hence freezing in the middle of playing a local file.
When I look at the info on my mac, there is a green lock on the session and it seems to be fixed at 16MBps.
I’ve been through hours and hours of checking settings on both the mac and the apple tv and haven’t got anywhere. There is no transcoding going on. direct play on the file. This whole thing was working great as recently as last night and now it just seems to be stuck.
The green lock simply indicates that the steam is being sent over a secure connection, which is how streams are normally sent to any Plex client now (it’s the default setting in all clients).
If you go into the settings there will be a “allow insecure connections” preference you can change to allow them on the local network or anytime (which you do not want to use for security reasons!).
While using a secure connection can have a small impact on performance on lower end devices that isn’t going to be a concern on an Apple TV. I would look elsewhere for the source of your problem.
It’s a difficult issue to figure out as it’s intermittent and then starts working again for no apparent reason.
Apple TV shows on the apple TV app seem to work fine, so I can only guess that it is plex that is playing up.
I did have a look at that allow insecure connections… and I cannot find an option for that anywhere in my settings.
Install Infuse (non pro version) and connect it to plex. Once connected, run the speedtest in the app. It will use a media file through plex to test the speed directly from your server. Compare the speed when things are working fine to when you experience issues. It could show an intermittent issue with signal.
