Plex caching old (incomplete) TVDB metadata?

Server Version#: 1.41.3.9314
Player Version#: 4.145.0

I’ve been recording a PBS show called Molly of Denali from my OTA DVR, and as with many animated childrens’ shows they run back to back stories within a single episode. IMDB, Rotten Tomatoes, for example, show the combined stories as a single episode, while TVDB and TMDB both have individual stories as a single episode. I’m guessing this is due to how PBS Kids makes them available to stream. All of that is background to…

I noticed on TVDB there had been an initial effort to create a PBS regional order for the show that listed the combined stories in a single episode. I went ahead and fleshed that out through all 4 existing seasons. A third of the way through though I realized that I had made some mistakes, and went back to correct them. One of the key differences was noticing what I had thought was S01E10 was actually S01E04 (took me a while to find the proper source of truth for the PBS EPG listings).

I updated the show’s advanced settings Episode ordering to “TheTVDB (PBS)”, and watched the episode titles start to be replaced with the edits I’d made. However, the E10 → E04 reorder was never pulled down! In addition, the metadata stops at S01E25, and season 2 stops at S02E06, which also happens to be where I paused to make updates. And then there’s just flat out nothing for seasons 3 and 4 (just default Episode X names).

I’ve tried switching to another episode ordering and switching back, moving the files out of and back into the library, creating a new library. Each time, once TheTVDB (PBS) is selected for episode ordering, I see the same results.

How do I force Plex to fetch the updated TVDB episode titles and ordering??

How recently did you make the changes on TVDB? The entry says it was last updated yesterday, and it can take a couple days for Plex to pull in new changes from other metadata providers. It sounds like in this instance Plex updated things in the middle of your changes, so you’ll probably have to wait a bit before the the rest of the changes are available.

That was just created yesterday as far as I can see. It will take a few days for us to complete getting metadata changes for that order.

I made them yesterday, right before I swapped the episode ordering source.

This kind of (probably) explains it? Does Plex maintain an intermediate metadata cache per source? I was confused because it picked up half my changes, but not the rest, so I thought I just had to refresh the metadata after my changes were complete, but that didn’t do anything.

Plex uses its own metadata database. That database is populated from sources like tvdb, tmdb and imdb. That data is combined, and then given to plex users. However it can take 3-5 days, sometimes a bit longer for changes in tvdb/tmdb to get ingested into plex.
