Server Version#:1.31.0.6654 or later
Player Version#:
Any version of plex above 1.30.2.6563 causes my Synology DSM220Plus to overheat and shutdown at 2am every night. I had upgraded to the latest version and the crash was happening every single night within 3 minutes of the 2am maintenance tasks starting.
I have then rolled back to 1.29.2.6364-7000 and then installed a new version each night until I found the one that causes the failure. The issues have started with 1.31.0.6654 so I suspect a change between 1.30.2.6563 and 1.31.0.6654, possibly due to changes to transcoding and trying to transcode something and misidentifying the CPU in the NAS?
I have noticed several other users having this issue in Reddit, so I don’t believe it is related to my data or NAS.
I will need DEBUG log files to confirm what’s happening with transcoding.
Regarding overheating, if this is what DSM reports, Open it up and check for “dust bunnies”. I have two Synology units. They collect a lot of dust and need cleaning annually
DSM error report:
DS220plus (SN: XXXXXXXXXXXX) was shut down automatically because the system was
overheating, and reached a temperature of 90°C. Please go to DSM > Control Panel > Hardware
& Power to change the fan speed or move the device to a cooler location.
I can reliably make this happen just by switching between the two aforementioned Plex versions and the inside of the NAS is cleaned regularly with compressed air.
If you could instruct me on how to generate the exact DEBUG log you need, I am not overly keen on uploading the raw zip of logs to a public forum
Here are the only log files that have been written to around the time of the overheating. I believe any errors being shown around 2:05 are due to the DSM initiating shutdown. Perhaps trying to scan Ultraviolet for credits is causing it? However this doesnt happen on the older version of Plex.

Although, and sorry for the quick posting, it seems this film shows every night in the scanner logs but earlier on older versions, around 2:01am. Not sure what runs in what order during maintenance. But it would appear that the error in the scanner credits log is not directly linked to the overheating?

After the first failures I changed to full speed but to no avail. The NAS is just sitting on my desk beside me, away from any heat sources. Also the country I live in is not known for its warmth! So shutting down at 2am is highly unlikely due to any external conditions. The room it is in would likely be no more than 10C at night.
Both fans are turning and you could eat your dinner off the insides of the NAS! Swapping between those two versions of Plex Server reliably enables and disables the problem
Disabling Intro Detection seems to have solved it. I will upgrade to latest plex version tonight and see if it is still fine tomorrow, then I will reenable Intro Detection to verify.
The reason you haven’t seen many reports is possibly because if you use the built in Synology “App Store” the latest version they list is 1.29.2.6364-7000. Once they update their repository with 1.31 you may find more reports come in, especially if intro detection is on by default. I will report back with my tests on Intro detect in a few days for completeness.
Given Credit/ Intro detection is causing the overheat,
You need to contact Synology for Repair/RMA consultation.
There are others who use this model and many other Synology models.
There is a mechanical/electrical issue somewhere in the unit.
It might be the heat sink itself or speed of the cooling fan.
Only Synology can tell for certain.
Given the low-power nature of the CPU and that it takes about a minute, I suspect a heatsink problem.
