Plex client on Shield playing DVD (MPEG2) content frame rate issues

I think this is why Channels DVR has a built interlacer…

But I see the same issue with DVR recorded content…

These are ripped from DVD. It’s a Plex issue when it was playing fine before and now does not. Not a file issue.

I had a DVD collection that had several discs that were poorly encoded and played like crap thru Plex and most other players I tried. I ran them through handbrake and made sure to de-interlace and preserve the 30fps frame rate. Now they play fine on all players.

I will clarify; it is not just Plex or just the Shield, but it is because of a very poor encoder that some production companies and networks seem to be using these days and the Shields inability to properly handle the poor encoding. Any file or program that has progressive video (480p, 720p 1080p 4k) appear on my systems to be unaffected and immune to the stuttering, ripping/tearing of interlaced video. If plex transcodes live TV on the fly (480i>480p or 1080i>1080p) it is less noticeable and WMC7’s decoder also seems to handle it better but with some slight artifacts. And as I said before, if you have a ripped or recorded file, running it through handbrake can make the video more watchable (though not perfect).

I have no issue transcoding my DVD content. It’s DVD, so it’s not like it’s high quality to begin with. My issue is that this problem did not previously exist. I have been running Plex since its inception, and the Shield Pro’s since they came out. Something changed… And now it affects recorded TV. And I really don’t want to have to transcode every time a show is recorded in order to watch it…

I spent some more time looking at the sample clip @avmike provided. I was able to successfully remove the RFF flags without ruining the video. However, this won’t work because the flag is being used for more than creating the 3:2 pattern. There’s no way to tell where it’s used to repeat arbitrary frame information and where it’s used for pulldown. So, blanket turning the flag off causes the video and audio to come out of sync as frames are lost. I see no way to generically fix this without transcoding.

The real fix here is for Plex and/or Nvidia to sort out the MPEG2 decoding issue. This flag isn’t an obscure part of the codec or anything.

It’s not poor encoding. Perhaps creative use of the RFF flag in the case of broadcast TV, but definitely not non-standard. And DVDs habitually use this flag since they’re required (assuming NTSC) to produce a 30i output.

Amazon should thank Plex. This issue went on too long. I jumped off the Nvidia Shield Ship and bought a Fire TV Cube 3rd Gen. No issues with MEG2 files. I’m keeping both players and will go back and forth when Plex has issues. Not ideal but couldn’t deal with it any longer.

I’m having the same issue. I also say something has changed because I didn’t have this issue before.
I’ve watched Stargate SG1 lots of time in the past and never experienced this. Either an update to my Nvidia Shield Pro or my Plex server must be causing this.

Yah… something definitely changed. I gave up on this issue. I transcoded all my DVD content to h.265. Normally I don’t transcode - as I prefer to keep original quality. However, DVD is all low definition anyway… so really no big deal…

I watched 4k The Matrix today(direct stream). At times I had the same issue. I’ve read some people have rolled back the Plex Client version. I’m not sure how to go about that or what version I should roll back too. I currently have version 10.7.0.5386. on Nvidia Shield Pro 9.1.1
If anyone can point me to directions I’d greatly appreciate it.

Is this a ripped 4K disc? If so, it should be H.265/HEVC and not subject to this issue. Also, the Shield should be doing DirectPlay - not DirectStream if you streaming from a local Plex server.

Yes, my bad. Direct play. Yes the movie was ripped using MKV. I Still believe the issues are related in some way. Previous player versions didn’t have these issues. Hopefully someone will direct me to a how to sideload,I believe, on my Nvidia Shield Pro

I’m having this MPEG2 playback issue on my NVIDIA Shield Pro as well. If I play the same files in another program on the Shield (i.e. VLC), I don’t see this issue. I’m gonna hold off on transcoding my extensive DVD tv show collection and wait for this to get fixed. Thanks :+1:
