Recent update causes stutters and audio sync issues

Server Version#: 1.32.5.7349
Player Version#: 1.25.3.5448

Recently started experiencing stutters on all my content when viewing on my Nvidia Shield. I’ll get a quick stutter and then the audio gets out of sync. This happens over and over very frequently. I never had this issue before on the same content so it appears something with a recent update caused this. Plex is up to date on my Unraid server and Shield. Everything is connected via ethernet.

I’m playing at original quality like always but if I change it to convert automatically the issue seems to go away. I’d really rather not have to do this obviously. Anyone have an actual fix?

Only started happening with the last update for plex for the shield

Would you be able to reproduce the issue and provide your client logs? Is it with all content or specific formats?

log.txt (4.8 MB)

Let me know if this log file is what you need (first time logging).

So far I haven’t found content that doesn’t cause the issue on this device. By the way, the same content plays perfectly on my iPad Plex app at original quality so it seems isolated to the Nvidia Shield.

Thanks yes that log file is correct. What setup do you have? So TV and audio system and how is it connected? Only asking as I am unable to reproduce the issue on my own Nvidia Shield.

I’m using an Epson HC3800 Projector and Yamaha RX-V6A receiver connected via HDMI.

Similar setup here. Shield Pro > Receiver
As mentioned, if you disable passthrough which forces audio transcoding the shuttering stops.
Logs can be uploaded too
Using a windows server

I am trying to reproduce it but so far am not running into the issue. From the sounds of it, it could be an audio issue. And you say it’s all formats and not specific to an audio format like TrueHD of EAC3? Do either of you have any settings like refresh rate or resolution switching enabled? And your Shield is directly connected to the AVR? Does it happen instantly or only after seeking or is random?

I have tried with and without refresh and resolution switching on and off. Still happens.
It happens pretty suddenly, within the first minute.
Seems identical to this, audio doesnt stutter at all. Just the picture.
Drops frames then catches up.

Shield is connected directly to receiver.
Definitely happens with EAC3 audio, I’ll double check the other audio formats for you today

Thanks for the responses

I’m having EXACT the same issue on an Nvidia Shield player.
Issue is talked about here :

https://www.reddit.com/r/PleX/comments/1636mdz/plex_929x_introduced_intermittent_stuttering_and/

Also the solution there provided worked for me too. So uninstall whole client, and then reinstall it via sideloading procedure with downloaded apk v9.28.0.3162 and everything works smooth again without any change on serverside (windowsserver latest version on NUC i5 but that’s beside the point)

PS : then don’t forget to DISABLE automatic update or he’ll update the app automaticly and you are back to square 1.

This is 100% sure a bug introduced from v9.29 like they discuss on reddit.
Hopefully this will get fixed soon.

Hi there. For me is exactly the same probleme with plex on nvidia shield tv pro. I Will try to download other versión. Kind regards for all

I’ve seen this occasionally with my videos (both h264 and hevc) that have Dolby audio formats (TrueHD, AC3) that are passed through in my setup (Shield TV Pro 2019 → Soundbar → TV). I haven’t been seeing it with videos that have DTS-HD, FLAC, AAC, or Opus. DTS-HD is passed through, but the others are decoded by the Shield.

Following, the above reddit thread is mine. I have 2 systems that present the same issue(s):

3.1 System going from Old SHIELD > Denon X3700H AVR > Samsung Q80R
5.1.2 System going from New SHIELD Pro > Onkyo NR7100 > LG C1 OLED

I did sideload 9.28 on the 2nd system and it fixed the issue. I’m still running the latest Plex version on the 1st system with issues.

Having this issue also. Have a Shield tube and Pro. Both have video stutter. Seems to be more noticable on 480i or p files. Glad I found this topic and did not go through factory resetting both Shields. Hopefully a fix will come soon. Will transcode and not direct play for now. Annoying to watch.

Same issue Android TV Shield Pro into Marantz and Sony tv. Sideloaded 9.28 fixed the issue. Looking forward to acknowledgement and a fix. For now, auto updates are disabled.

Has been driving me crazy for weeks!

Did anyone have this issue with a video that had a non-Dolby audio track (TrueHD, EAC3, AC3) selected? Trying to help narrow down possible culprits.

Very quiet on plex side… why dont they answer to this issue. also on my second system I use on the tvdecoder all worked fine but same issues on latest version. Since I dont use this system often I dont sideload 9.28 and use this as testsystem to see if bug is fixed. already installed several newest betas but very quiet on plex side as they dont acknowledge there is a problem?

I should check but first I’ve thought it was on 4K only but now I saw it’s on 1080p also that are x265 encodes (I stream directly without any transcoding) but all my files are TrueHD, EAC3, AC3
I’ll check one with AAC audio and update this post.

UPDATE : Checked an 1080p x265 with AAC 5.1 sound and also there a very little stutter is noticeable but its watchable but then again it NOT on my system with the 9.28 sideload.

@morganj was anyone at Plex able to reproduce this?

Hi, no so far not. I use the shield on a daily basis and have yet to experience the issue. The issue has been filed to be looked at. I notice that everyone experiencing the issue is using the setup Shield > AVR/sound bar > TV. Would someone be able to confirm if it still happens in the setup Shield > TV > AVR/Soundbar? I just want to pinpoint the issue as I am unable to reproduce it yet. Then maybe what audio settings you are using on the Shield.
