Plex video playback starts stuttering on NVIDIA Shield Pro but not on Roku - Revisit

Howdy!

I recently switched from a Roku Ultra to a Shield Pro and I am having the same issues as this older post

Has anyone figured out any solutions to this? I have done lots of research and it seems like no one has received a straight answer on how to fix the stuttering issue.

Thanks!

Ugh I was trying to keep that issue updated with “re-tested on latest version and it is still a problem”.

Very frustrating that it gets closed even though it is confirmed to be an issue by a Plex team member.

Yes I am still seeing this issue and no I haven’t heard of a fix or workaround, cc @ChuckPa

Thanks for the reply… I really hope someone can get this fixed. Frustrating when you pay that much for a device and the one app you use the most does this :frowning:

Let me rewind please to ensure I’m in sync?

  1. PMS server is on the Shield Pro --OR-- (BETTER) on another machine?
  2. Nvidia is indeed a Shield Pro 2019 ?
  3. Have any of my test videos been played (not that it should matter) ?

I’m asking this because:

  1. TS-128 ARMv8 PMS server (gigabit only)
  2. Shield Pro 2019 PLAYER (no server)
  3. DirectPlay everything (even the 100 Mbps stuff)
  4. NO stuttering
  1. PMS server is on the Shield Pro --OR-- (BETTER) on another machine?
  • PMS is on DS220+

2 . Nvidia is indeed a Shield Pro 2019 ?

  • Yes - 2019 model
  1. Have any of my test videos been played (not that it should matter) ?
  • No, but i have tested 720p/1080p and 4k. All of these worked on the Roku Ultra with zero stuttering before switching to Shield Pro

Thank you for the response.

I have the Ultra and the Shield Pro.

I don’t get any stuttering from either.

Most common issue I find with these devices is the player app configuration.
It’s the root issue because it’s what tells PMS how to play.

My settings are:

  1. Original quality (maximum)
  2. Subtitles - AUTOMATIC (don’t tell it to burn anything, let it decide)

How are your settings?

Are these WiFi?
Is the server Wired or WiFi also?

Thank you for the quick response.

Your two settings - are you referring to the settings on the Pro or within PMS (sorry if that is a dumb question)

Both devices are wired, no WIFI

The settings I refer to are the Shield player app’s settings.
PMS should not be limited in any way for LAN playback (default)

This pic is a bit dated. I’ll get a fresh set.

Home Streaming – Maximum
Audio - Original (I have an Onkyo which the Shield connects to)

I will check once I get home from work. Thanks again for the quick responses.

The Shield is my Go-To player.
It’s top tier in everything.
To hear someone is having problems just doesn’t fit with what I know.
(I push it to 180 Mbps DirectPlay and it never flinches)

I agree! It seems like a solid device - just need to get this figured out.

I will definitely let me know what I find on the screenshot above.

Thanks again!

Hi,
I’m joining in here because I also have these frame drops.
Unfortunately, they are difficult to reproduce because they are completely random.
I can watch the same episode 5 times and 4 times everything is fine.

I haven’t had the problem for very long and generally everything works great, but sometimes it’s as if the file is running at 10fps… like a hiccup, usually it recovers on its own

At least for me it only occurs with 4K material… regardless of whether it is HDR or SDR

-Client is a Shield 2019
-Server is my old Shield 2017 via gigabit and the files are on an 8TB SSD on the USB port of the shield. -Streaming is on maximum, subs auto, framerate match on or off doesn’t matter

  • TV is an S95C, shield via HDMI into the TV and then via eARC into the soundbar
  • everything is Direct Play btw… no transcoding at all… (all HEVC files)

It doesn’t matter whether it’s a 10mbit file or a 100mbit file… it looks to me like the bitrate doesn’t really play a role.

It is a bit annoying, but not a big deal for me.
A fix would be nice though

Sorry if it sounds weird, I used google translate for this text

Just chiming in that I have this same issue. Sometimes it happens alongside an audio de-sync as well.

Going through the TV to the soundbar is problematic.

There isn’t a TV made which handles 5.x or 7.x audio.

There are Denon users who have the same problem with Sony.

In my configuration:

PMS Server → LAN → Nvidia Shield Pro → Onkyo → HDMI → OLED TV

I get full audio , which is stripped and rendered in the Onkyo. Only the Video goes to the LG OLED. No issues.

Finally home - checked the settings like you mentioned… everything is set like you stated. The only difference was the passthrough - mine was set to disabled - should it be set to HDMI?

Also, should I change any of the refresh rate switching?

I turn the refresh rate switching OFF as well as anything else which causes the TV to change to match the video. I let the shield do ALL the lifting.

Yes, change them to match mine. It’ll give us a starting point.

Sorry, but if the refresh rate switch to off, and the Shield is set to 4K59Hz, 4K60Hz or 4K50Hz, but the Movie is 24Hz or 23,98Hz, is must be look like stuttering.

Everytime the Refresh Rate Switch should be “ON”

@1lolo94
I would be interested to know if the problem goes away if you use Plex Player version 9.28. See this issue here: Recent update causes stutters and audio sync issues - #58 by chris0101

Update - I changed the passthrough to HDMI and after 30 seconds the shield would just turn off. Disabling the passthrough allows it to play without turning off.

After this the issue still was happening. I changed the refresh rate switching to on and seemed to help… still there but not as bad.

turning on the refresh rate switch seems to help for sure.

I am currently running version - 10.19.2.1191 on my Shield - would it be safe to downgrade?

Thanks

Here are my settings (TV and Shield Pro)

I’m running 10.19.0 app version

Yes, that is the forum reflecting in the TV display lol
