I love the idea but would like to know a few things about Plex Cloud.
- Will the Plex Cloud server co-exist with our main PMS setups on our HTPC’s? Could we use it not as the main server but say a backup or secondary to the main PMS? This is a key thing I would like to know. My main server is perfect but not accessible 24/7 so Plex Cloud seems to be the most beneficial if it would be able to mirror all the data and content of the main server, but run as a secondary “Cloud Server” when my main PMS is not available.
Will what I stated above be possible with Plex Cloud?
Also, would be curious to know how the legality of this will work as copying content you payed for is still a really touchy area in regards to media you have purchased legally.
Cheers,
Yes, you can use Plex Cloud and Plex Media Servers at the same time. Yes, you can mirror all data from the main server to Amazon Drive with third party applications.
It’s illegal in most countries (if not all) to circumvent copy protection of physical media like DVD, Blu-ray and 4k Ultra HD Blu-ray. It’s also illegal to remove digital content protection like iTunes DRM, HDCP and Widevine. The only legal way to get media for Plex is to use a DVR or SVR.
Circumventing/removing any copy/content protection is not “less illegal” than pirating just because you paid money for it. Illegal is illegal.
That’s good to know. Plex Cloud as a secondary to the main server is worth it if this is possible. Will the third party applications copy the metadata, posters, collections and all naming and sorting changes that have been made over the years to Plex Cloud server?
Also I think in the UK they ruled in favor of copying and backing up your own media didn’t they? I know the US has not did anything like this though they definitely should.
No, you can’t copy any metadata, posters, playlists, watch status etc from your main server to Plex Cloud.
Imagine it as a remote server you have no control over. You can only add your Amazon Drive account and then create new libraries.
Nope, it’s illegal in the UK as well. It was very briefly legal in 2014 but not anymore.
See here:
What would be interesting is which laws apply here. The laws of your country or the laws of the country where the servers are located (which in the case of Amazon is the US?)
Ahhhh ok I see thanks for the info. Sucks that you can’t “clone” your server to the cloud as this would be in my opinion a fantastic way to expand your existing PMS.
And wow I didn’t know they reversed it. They go through years and years of debates and finally approve copying your own content for personal use, then reverse it a year later? Makes no sense to me.
Usually where the hardware is located. But I’m not aware if we have a choice regarding Amazon Cloud Drive. Amazon has many locations where they run their centers: https://aws.amazon.com/about-aws/global-infrastructure/
It would make sense that European customers have their data stored in Frankfurt or in Ireland, but Amazon does not seem to be transparant in that regards (for consumers).
