Plex Cloud questions

I so hope they are going to introduce some of the things that Stablebit did with their Cloud Drive.
They divide files into chunks, and run downloads multithreaded, to give you awesome speeds. At the same time it’s fully encrypted.

That requires you to host a Plex Media Server locally though - having that in the cloud together with the above features, would be an absolute killer and give Plex and their drive providers some $$$

OK either I missed it or it was not stated, but other than the cost of Amazon Drive will there be a cost to use Plex Cloud? I know there may not be specifics but knowing if there will be a charge for Plex Cloud or not if you are a Plex Pass member would be great.

Beside the Amazon Cloud Drive subscription the only thing required is a PlexPass subscription

Are you sure about this? I have not seen anything about that from Plex. It sounds very unlikely to be honest. This is more likely a way to squeeze more money from lifetime Plex Pass holders for what is considered a new service.

Yes

Wait so, if I have a Plex Pass already, will this service be free + ACD costs, or it’s ANOTHER Plex Pass + ACD costs? I’m lost here.

Instead of hooking up plex cloud to amazon drive, can I hook it up to a NAS on my home network? I have high-speed broadband internet that is always on.

Why would you want it to?

So I don’t have to pay for Amazon Drive. I have a spare HDD that I could repurpose as a NAS, and I have enough internet bandwidth that uploading/streaming is no problem. Since Plex is kind enough to do all the processing on their own servers at no extra cost to me, it would be great if I could simply point Plex Cloud to my NAS. Since I have my own storage space, and I don’t need Amazon Drive for anything else, I’d rather not pay for it. However, if Amazon Drive were included with Amazon Prime, then this would be the final straw that gets me to buy Prime, but sadly that is not the case.

You just need your normal plex pass account plus ACD subscription. You don’t need to buy another plexpass account.

Let me be more specific. I have a Plex Pass (Lifetime) account. Will I have access to Plex Cloud included or not?

your existing PlexPass subscription is all you need, other than an ACD subscription

Yes, but during the initial Beta it is invite only. Once that phase is done then it will be opened up to all PP users

Alright then. Sounds good.

Any idea when invites will be sent out?

I signed up for the Beta and it said I should get a confirmation email just informing me I have signed up for the Beta but I haven’t gotten it? Am I the only one?

While this all seems like a lovely idea, (and I hope I get an invite) but how is it going to work? as surely the server power required to transcode a large number of files on demand is going to be immense.

And if Plex does provide the transcoding, then people will become lazy and not bother to convert their media into Plex friendly formats, so putting further demands on Plex server resources

Didn’t get a conformation either… Signed up for the Beta and after that subscribed to Plex Pass, but haven’t got anything, desperate to try Plex Cloud!

So I have a very customized Plex library with lots of custom artwork and descriptions etc. Will the PMS database files be stored on my Amazon Drive where I can access it and back it up. Will I be able to take my current PMS database and upload it to Amazon Drive and then link media files on Amazon Drive so I don’t lose hour and hours of custom work on my Movies library?

@okko so that won’t happen. That’s saying we’re sharing. We’re not supposed to share. You’re supposed to have a digital copy of the media you already purchased.

Totally agree, I posted similar in another thread. Netflix and Amazon can get away with it as their source material won’t be high bitrate in the first place, so any transcoding will be limited. With plex though, everyone will just rip a blu ray and upload that.

The outcome when it goes out to the public and no longer invite only will be one of:

  • appauling performance
  • Increase cost as plex can’t get the business model to work
  • only direct play being supported

Can’t see this working if they offer transcoding.

@“Chris Teasdale”
No confirmation email for me either

No. You can download the database and logs but they are only for issue investigation.

No

Of course, Amazon could massively change their subscription model to the Cloud (especially if they start paying Plex an introducers commission). Then Plex will just tell us that it’s not Plex’s fault that costs have gone up.
