Plex completely mis-identifies some movies

Plex does a mostly great job of identifying my movies stored on a Western Digital NAS server (WDMyClousEX2 Ultra) where my filenames generally match the movie title exactly. Occasionally Plex completely misses the mark. For example, the movie “The Magnificent Seven” is identified as “Seven Samurai”, and the movie “Crash” as “Stunt Rock”. Is there a way I can correct those errors?

Naming & Organizing Your Movie Files

Make sure you follow Plex naming and organization requirements.

You’ll need to provide specific examples, including how the files are named and organized.

That is the version of Plex Web.

For the server version, look in Settings → Server_Name → General. It will be 1.41.x, 1.42.x, etc.

For the 1960 version:

/Movies <-- folder added to movie library. Exact name unimportant.
  /The Magnificent Seven (1960) <-- movie_name (year)
    /The Magnificent Seven (1960).mkv <-- movie_name (year).ext; ext=mkv/mp4/etc.

For movies with remakes, it is important to add the release year to the folder & file name, so Plex knows which movie to match.

Plex Dance the movie after renaming/reorganization to remove incorrect information from the Plex database.

If using a MP4/M4V file, edit the library and uncheck prefer local metadata. If the embedded metadata is incorrect, Plex will misidentify the movie.

You may also need to uncheck Use Original Title. The Magnificent Seven was based on the movie Seven Samurai. That might be throwing things off somehow.

After editing library settings, refresh metadata if Plex does not do so automatically.
