Plex crashing or causing iMac pro to crash/reboot

Server Version#: Version 1.14.1.5488

Looking for any help fixing potential issues with Plex and OSX Mojave (currently 10.14.2)

So for a little while now I’ve been running latest updates to both Plex and MacOS, I’ve been having my Plex server either just close itself, or a crash of the Mac itself. This can be completely random as to when it happens, sometimes ill get to watch a few episodes without incident, sometimes numerous times per episode. It will crash overnight when not in use at all and just performing its scheduled tasks.

Things I have tried:
Full uninstall of Plex and clean reinstall (no back ups, re add all my data myself)
NVRAM and SMC resets
Deleted all cache on the Mac, rebooted and let it regenerate the cache before emptying trash
Created a new partition on my Mac without Plex, had no issues at all
Reinstalled OSX over my current install, issue persisted

I have also checked all crash log locations as per https://support.plex.tv/articles/201455336-crash-logs-plex-media-server/ and there are none to be found.

Any suggestions would be most welcome as I am running out of ideas, thanks in advance

You might try searching the forums for Mojave and Crashing. There were a bunch of threads like this but the 1.14.1.5488 release fixed those problems. Still might be something in there to steer you right.

I can confirm I have also been suffering with this issue. Latest server version. Latest public release of MacOS (10.14.2).

I have done everything the original poster has done but I have even gone one step further and tried a complete clean install of MacOS to try to resolve problem to no avail.

After setting everything up again, the server crashed during a metadata refresh of one of the libraries and actually killed MacOS completely. The Mac wouldn’t not longer boot up at all. Would get around 50% of the way through the boot up and then just run off. I had to boot back to my MacOS install drive and re-install MacOS again. Something went seriously wrong during that crash!

What is the solution to this?? I really need some assistance here. I am a Plex Pass member and have been using Plex for so many years, on this same Mac but to be honest since High Sierra I have been noticing this issues. Every morning seeing a message telling me that the Mac has restarted because of an issue…? Because for the most part Plex was still working, I was kind of just ignoring the problem. But now I am having more serious issues I have been diving into the problem more and I have narrowed the problem down to Plex Media Server. Basically, if I don’t run Plex, everything is fine, the Mac over a number of days of testing will not crash or reboot during the night or at any time. Start the Plex Server up and randomly it will start crashing.

Plex Team… Please, what is the issue? Is it the case that the software doesn’t fully support Mojave yet? As looking at the download page, Mojave is not listed as a supported MacOS version yet. Are you aware internally within your team of issues like this??

I really have nowhere else yo turn. I feel I have done everything I possible can to rule out a hardware or setup problem on my side. Yet the problem remains.

Please help. I need Plex back in my life. Currently the setup is completely unusable and Plex will not even start up.

so touch wood since posting I have had 0 crashes (even over night ones)

Things I’ve changed:

I have an older Samsung TV the one with the unofficial Plex app. It is my main TV and I’ve been mainly watching Plex upstairs running through the Xbox One.

Last night was the first night I watched downstairs in a few days. There was no crashes, however I did have frequent “there was a server error” during the first 5-10 mins of each episode, then none for the remainder of the episode.

Feeling slightly optimistic that something has changed and I can start fixing all my my watched status and collections again.

@Damien_Butt Unsure if you also have an older Samsung with the unofficial app or even if its connected to the issues but beyond my original post that’s the only change I’ve tried so far thats shown some results

Hey,

No all my client are official ones. Using Apple TV (4th gen and 4K ones), and then iPads etc. No problems with the clients.

Mine is certainly a server problem with MacOS.

I have a backup Plex server that runs on Qnap NAS that stores all the content. That server runs fine. I say backup as I will only use it as a second choice because the CPU isn’t as powerful as the as on the Mac Mini plus the Qnap has half the RAM. The Qnap is also setup to connect to the internet via a private VPN for reasons I won’t go into but because of this it means the Plex server on the Qnap is not accessible outside my local network. Only the Plex server that runs on the Mac Mini is accessible outside my network which is another reason I want to find a solution as with this server currently down I have no way to access my content on the go.

I feel your pain mate, I was on the phone with apple support for a few days trouble shooting it
the guy was at a loss for what was wrong and was nervous as he’d never had such issues pop up on an iMac Pro before.

I believe the current release of Plex has broken the remote access as well
I could be wrong but its either that or I’m still having issues

It would seem your issues is different to mine then.

I’ve given up trying to fix the problem now and I really need someone from the Plex team to step in and help me out. I can provide logs and all that. I can’t even get the server to start up now. Pled icon appear and then disappears momentarily in the menu bar. Restarting the Mac or replacing the application which a freshly downloaded one from the Plex website doesn’t fix the issue.

So my problems are now two fold. 1) Need to get Plex server to start up again. 2) Then need to continue looking in to why Plex keeps crashing my Mac.

Plex, if you are listening please can you offer me some assistance.

may very well of been the same issue and mines just somehow resolved itself

I also had Plex refusing to launch at one point as you do now, I had to do a full uninstall/reinstall to get that working agian.

if only I could nail it down to something specific that worked for me so you could try it

Having same issue, good to know its not just my setup. I only started experiencing this when i updated only the Plex Media Player to 2.26.0.947. After doing this my Mac automatically logs me out. usually happens over night whilst servers are not in use… takes me to the grey screen saver screen thats has the words mac mini bouncing around (note screen saver settings are turned off completely) when i log back in everything automatically relaunches. plex media server, drop box… anything that was previously opened before this issue.
Been on the phone to apple everything is well with the computer.
Anyone figured out a solution or reason for this as yet?

is everybody still having problems with plex crashing MacOS and forcing a system restart? still having problems my end. anyone found a solution as yet? its rather frustrating.

Hi Folks. I think I am having the same issues. Originally I suspected a hard ware fault, so this is what I have tried.

  1. Disconnect all unnecessary accessories, such as external HD’s.
  2. Format HD.
  3. Reinstall Mojave.
  4. Do all Software Updates.
  5. Reset NVRAM and SMC.

Pause - tested for a week - no crashes. - Time to add software.

  1. Added PLEX server - most recent version.
  2. Enabled Remote Access.
  3. Updated the media library.

Result - Crashed overnight. I am now certain that Plex Server is causing this issue.

Help please has anyone at all found a solution please?

On a separate note, when I run the server on my Macbook, it runs fine and does not crash.

So I see this as a Plex Server/iMac issue. I am on Mid 2017 27" iMac.

Help please Plex, see if you can fix this issue.

My symptom of crash is that it will not wake from sleep, black screen and only thing to do it hard reboot.

It is random when it happens.

Thanks

John
