Plex Media Server completely crashes no matter how many times it's restarted

Server Version#: 1.24.0 and 1.24.1 (it started happening in 1.24.1 and I rolled back, still happening)
Player Version#: Latest versions on MacOSX, AppleTV, iOS, and Android

So Plex Media Server has essentially just collapsed on me. No matter how many times I attempt to update it or reinstall it, it’ll boot up, I’ll be unable to scan, unable to edit libraries, and unable to play anything. I can open Plex app on other devices and see my media but be unable to play anything.

And after about 15-20 ish minutes (sometimes more) it becomes completely unresponsive and I can’t even open settings in web anymore at all. I’ve tried multiple versions of Plex Media Server. It’s been working fine for over a year and in the past 18 hours or so just nothing.

I’ll attach my latest logs here and can reply with any questions…I’m very desperate and don’t want to lose everything especially after paying for a lifetime pass,

Also this happens a lot:

Full logs: Plex Media Server Logs_2021-08-25_13-14-50.zip (1.5 MB)

Same thing here with version 1.24.1. I can log in the user, but the Plex Media Process immediately crashes if I:

  1. Hit the settings button
  2. Try to play a movie

Don’t see anything in the log files. Do see 2 Plex Crash uploader files. Vaguely remember seeing another entry somewhere saying something like too many crashes to process (crash logs?).

MacOS 11.5.2 on iMac Pro

Same thing here with version 1.24.1 on macOS Catalina 10.15.7

Random crashes…

How can I troubleshoot the issue?
Debug log?

@rafilok yes, please provide debug level logs. @dmoor the same please.

Thanks @Atomatth I have a zip file of all the logs…
How would you like me to send them to you?
Can I email it to you?

Haven’t checked your logs, but boot in safe mode and then just Plex server. If same problem persists, it’s an issue with the OS or hardware. Had same issue. Wound up being bad graphics chips

1.24.1 completely broke my install as well, almost immediately. I’ve just rolled back to 1.24.0 and it seems to be back to normal.

EDIT: Nope, still doing it. I did happen to “upgrade” my libraries as I got that prompt today, not sure if it’s anything to do with that. When it happens again I’ll upload logs.

Please provide logs.

@JonAMoore What kind of Mac are you using? Where is your media stored? I do see some failures in the your Plex Media Scanner Matcher.log files, please check them to find the culprit files.

@rafilok You seem to have issues with your DB. Please try repairing your DB by following these instructions Repair a Corrupted Database | Plex Support.

@dmoor Please attempt to Optimize your DB, Clean Bundles, and turn off Verbose logging, Debug is fine.

Hey Atomatth!!
Thanks you so much for your response!
I’m trying to follow the instructions to repair the DB, but I’m struggling with the commands macOS Catalina 10.15.7…Any help?

Many thanks!!

EDIT: I found instructions here: How do I repair a corrupt database?

It seems repairing DB did the trick
Thanks man!!

Optimized, Cleaned, and turned off verbose. Still crashes as soon as I try to play a movie.

@dmoor
Do you mean that playback fails or that the PMS fails and the PMS icon in menu bar disappears? Does this happen when playing on web? Which browser? Does this happen when attempting playback on any app (Plex for Mac or iOS/tvOS)? Is it any movie or show or a specific movie?

What kind of Mac are you using? What version of MacOS are you on?

Let me defer answering your questions as last night my Apple TV Plex app asked if I wanted to update my MacOS server. It now shows 1.24.2.493 and it seems to be working! , Fingers crossed that it remains stable. Thanks for your help!

@JonAMoore are you still observing the issue?

I am not. It was an issue with my computer not with plex.

I didn’t say anything as others were posting their issues and getting help and I didn’t want to stop them from being able to do that.

Just didn’t want to forget about you. Glad you got it sorted!

Darn, it is happening again.

Do you mean that playback fails or that the PMS fails and the PMS icon in menu bar disappears?

The PMS icon and the Plex Media Server app in Activity monitor both disappear simultaneously when I try to play a movie.

Does this happen when playing on web?

Am using the web player. Just tried the media player app - “… unexpected error occured loading this library”. Doesn’t kill the process though.

Interestingly enough I may be able to watch movies which were added days earlier. Right now it is just crashing on newly added movies.

Which browser?

Safari, Firefox, Chrome

Does this happen when attempting playback on any app (Plex for Mac or iOS/tvOS)? Is it any movie or show or a specific movie?

Doesn’t happen on Apple TV. Seems to be recently added movies that are the problem.

What kind of Mac are you using? What version of MacOS are you on?

iMac Pro 11,5
