Plex did not find all of the metadata after migrating to DSM 7 (Synology)

Its not a matter of ripping, but goes back to one of the core issues people have with plex, Naming.

The names were fine on DSM6. I simply copied the entire Plex Media directory tree from an external drive onto the DSM7 drive.

When I refer to ripping, some. people do each episode in a TV series as a separate file, I prefer to rip a whole disc of episodes.

Although, I’ve had no end to problems getting Star Trek TOS, and TNG seen by Plex ( having read many threads about so many others having the same issues.)

I have used https://support.plex.tv/articles/naming-and-organizing-your-tv-show-files/
but it doesn’t always work, and it doesn’t explain why the collections from my DSM6 Plex Media directory are gone in DSM7

Are you speaking of media files or the contents of the Plex share please?

The media files of course. Only the media files should be under the PlexMedia directory.

Thanks. Sometimes the most innocent things are at the root of the issue.

DSM 7 is much stricter about permissions than DSM 6.

( Synology wanted to tighted security to make our files safer )

When you set the shared folder permissions (using filestation),
did you also check “Apply to this folder, sub-folders, and files” ?

@ChuckPa To tell you the truth, I don’t remember.
Due to the fact this debug session has been going on for so long (because of my job hunting), I’ve forgotten what I’ve done / not done.

I’ll check now, I’ve just done “Apply to folders, subs and files” on the PlexMedia volume.
I’ll restart the server, then rescan the media files.

I’ve set the permissions from Plex Media and down to tall folders/files.
Nothing changed.

I’ll just rebuild my collections from scratch, but I’m not sure why the TV series are all showing up as individual episodes ( I didn’t have this in DSM6)

Thanks

I know what I did wrong.
When I pointed Plex to my movies, I accidentally pointed it to Plex Media\Media,
instead of Plex Media\Media\Movies, so it ended up scanning all of the TV series too, and mixing them into the Movies display.

I’ve pointed Plex to Plex Media\Media\ TV Shows, and the shows are now being scanned correctly and show up under TV Shows now. At least, the same 3 shows that were displayed when I ran DSM6 are now also displayed in DSM 7.

I just need to figure out how to remove the current directory for the Movies display, so that
the tv shows that appear under Movies are removed.

The collections are gone, but I’ll just add them again manually. That’s a minor issue.

I’ve figured out what else I did wrong too.
Just before I migrated to DSM7, I was looking into why I couldn’t get Plex to recognize my Star Trek directories. I had found a thread which mentioned using a structure like this, purely for organizational reasons (not to help Plex find the shows).

Plex Media\TV Shows\Series\Star Trek\Star Trek
Plex Media\TV Shows\Series\Star Trek\ Star Trek The Next Generation
Plex Media\TV Shows\Series\Star Trek\ Star Trek Picard

Tonight, I removed the Series directory, suddenly Plex was able to find all of the rest of the TV shows that I’ve ripped.

I’m a happy camper now.

Thanks!
