Plex did not find all of the metadata after migrating to DSM 7 (Synology)

Server Version#: 1.26.1.5772-7000
Player Version#: Web browser (not a dedicated app)

I have a Synology DS1520+ which I installed 5 brand-new drives, Installed DSM 7, then installed Plex. I have copied my Plex Media folders from a backup drive onto the new Shared folder, and then ran Plex. I’ve set the permissions as directed in one of the stick threads about migrating to DSM7, and then pointed Plex to the new shared folder.

While Plex found all of my videos (or at least a plausible number of them. I don’t remember the exact count I had on DSM 6, but it looks plausible), the Collections did not get migrated and some of the videos are now misnamed. Since I don’t know the original name of these misnamed videos I cannot rename them.

Why didn’t the metadata get migrated from the old Plex media folder.

Was this from a previous DSM 7 installation or DSM 6 ?

If a DSM 6 backup – you MUST “import” into DSM 7.

  1. Put everything back in the Plex shared folder
    Structure: Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server

  2. Uninstall the package

  3. Make certain “PlexMediaServer” is empty.

  4. Now install. It will convert all the metadata refrences from DSM 6 → DSM 7.

The fundamental problem is symbolic links within the metadata. They all must be converted from absolute paths to relative paths.

This was from DSM 6.
Where is this “import feature”?
I followed the sticky thread(s) on Migrating to DSM 7, I don’t remember that terminology.

thanks for spotting this.

What do you mean by “everything”, and “back into”?

I never installed nor copied anything intoPlex Media Server, this is under control of the Plex App.
As far as I’m know, this is a “STAY OUT OF HERE” directory.

Fortunately, I still have a copy of the Plex media directory from the DSM 6 installation.

What are these please? From a Plex shared folder or a PlexMediaServer shared folder ?

Where did you copy them to?

I am asking because I think you put the files from the old “Plex” shared folder directly into the “PlexMediaServer” shared folder.

If you did, this will cause problems with metadata and playback. It’s why the Installer automatically migrates established DSM 6 installations to DSM 7.

In DSM6 the “videos” go in a folder called Media… (this is Plex’s choice for the Directory name I believe). The folder above Media is the shared folder that I created.

I did NOT copy them, and I did NOT put anything into “PlexMediaServer”
This is a directory created & managed by the Plex software, I will not touch it.

I simply used Settings, Manage, Libraries, Add Library, Add Folders To Your Library and pointed Plex at the old DSM6 Media folder (mentioned above).

I still do not not where this “Import library” feature can be found.
Would you point me to it?

Thanks

THANK YOU for explaining!!

I was concerned you put data in PlexMediaServer (which some have done and caused problems). Thank you for clearing that up.

With your Syno now on DSM 7, you did the following?

  1. Created the shared folder Media and gave PlexMediaServer access.
  2. Copied your media files back into Media
  3. Manually forced permissions to be set for the contents of Media ?
  • Right-click Media
  • Properties
  • Permissions
  • Change “Local Users” (upper left) to “System Internal User”
  • See “PlexMediaServer” listed.
  • Check the box to give the desired privilege level
  • “Save”
  • Checked the box “Apply to this folder, sub-folders, and files”.
  • “OK” (to let it add “PlexMediaServer” to the permissions list for everything in “Media”

This sound like what you did ?

There is no “import” button.
We only add more folders to our Library sections.
PMS scans and adds (implied import/index) those new folder(s).

Sorry if I confused. Migrating the metadata itself is an “import” operation the installer does perform for you. It is smart enough to import metadata from PMS on another operating system into DSM 7 Plex.

Yes, that looks like the steps I followed.

Do you have any suggestions how to get all of my metadata back and the titles correct?

I could delete, uninstall , try again but I don’t have high hopes for that to work either.

If you have the same PMS SPK (package file) from before.
And have the media in place, with user Plex having all permissions granted,
AND put Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server back as it was
AND make sure it’s all owned by plex,

When you install the SPK and it starts, it should pick right up where it left off.
If everything is correct, it won’t know anything happened.

Thanks, sorry for the late reply. I’ve been told my job will be eliminated in the near future, so I’ve started interviewing.

I’m looking back at the steps you listed- previously.
Local Users is not visible to me now.

That screenshot is from right clicking on Media, Properties, Permissions

Check the box to “Apply to this folder, sub-folders and files”

Then hit SAVE so all the files in the shared folder can be moved over.

Ok, I’ve done that.

I don’t see a “Plex User” at all, I only see the PlexMediaServer user

@cappy2112

I’m sorry. I was on a DSM 6 machine at the time.

YES, PlexMediaServer user

Hi, I just wanted to say I had this same issue, but the fix was manually downloading the PlexMediaServer-1.28.1.6104-788f82488-x86_64_DSM7.spk file, and my issues went away.
When you upgrade to DSM 7, the default plex server beta is installed, not the version that matches your previous version 6 install.
FYI you still need to make sure you sort out the permissions mentioned above.

To help clarify -

  1. Package Center still has, in spite our attempts to get it upgraded, the DSM 7 BETA app 1.21.0.3744. This version is NO LONGER COMPATIBLE.

  2. Downloading any version from Plex.tv/Downloads (Plex Pass or Public) is correct.

First of all, an explanation of what’s been going on.
In May I was told my job would end on Nov 1, so I started interviewing. Now that I have a job lined up, I’m ready to get back to trying to get Plex and my Synology up and running on DSM7.
Thanks to @ChuckPa and everyone for their posts and patience!

Today, I downloaded PlexMediaServer-1.28.2.6106-44a5bbd28-x86_64_DSM7.spk from Plex.tv and did the manual install. After the server came up I clicked on Scan Library Files (no change), the Refreshed All Metadata.

I then noticed “Recommended” was selected by default, clicking on “Library” shows most (if not all) of the movies & documentaries I had previously, but my TV Series are a complete mess now.
Each Disc/episode is displayed, instead of showing the Collections I previously had.
None of the collections I had created are visible.

Is there any way to restore these or do I have to do them by hand?

I think this is a secondary issue though, as I think I need a good (step by step) tutorial on how to rip DVDs (movies and TV series, so that they are more manageable in Plex). Does anyone have any pointers? I use a Mac for ripping.

Getting closer now

Thanks All

Its not a matter of ripping, but goes back to one of the core issues people have with plex, Naming.

If you follow the naming schema strictly from Naming and Organizing Your TV Show Files | Plex Support I use Forged in Fire {tvdb-296830}/Season 9/Forged in Fire - S09E16 - Gladiators of the Forge A Champion's Quest.mkv as one random example.
