Unfortunately, methods 1, 2, and 3 all fail to deliver an intact EAC3+Atmos audio stream
Methods 1 and 2 produce a playable file, but plays back as standard EAC3 5.1. MediaInfo shows the EAC3 complexity index as:
Complexity index: Not present / 15
Method 3 produces a playable file, but discards any metadata identifying the audio track as an atmos stream. (No reference to JOC, Complexity index, Number of Dynamic Objects, etc.)
Plex gives nay damn about any of this, folks. I remember waiting over a year for HDR tone-mapping. That’s when I knew Plex was no longer a “hobbyist” app. Plex has gone Hollywood and they’re leaving all their old friends behind.
Did anyone else struggle to get XBMC working only to be completely impressed with how Plex looked compared to it? That’s exactly where we are today, but this time around it’s Plex looking old, tired and incapable of Dolby Vision video playback.
We get it, Plex, or at least I do. Streaming Live TV is your new thing and we can bet cold hard cash Plex will expect “Lifetime” members to pony up something for what they’re working on. We’re just a legacy commitment no longer generating revenue. They don’t take us for granted, they just want us gone as we’re so damn demanding. Once we’re gone, Plex can rebrand and sell some stuff to a whole new group of dopes willing to pay for their future just like we paid for their’s so long ago (29 Sep 2014, for me).
Get over your Stockholm syndrome, Plex suckers. The party ended a long time ago, why are you still here? Plex has made it abundantly clear they aren’t interested in helping Plex lifetime members, but here you are, still waiting for scrapes in the form of an update? How long will you wait?
P.S. Infuse Pro is only 99¢ a month or $10/year, which is far less than I was willing to pay to watch some movies and TV with DV. Infuse can also stream from network shares. It also allows for silky smooth slow motion playback and adjustable aspect ratios. Infuse is a vast improvement over the Plex client and all it took was Plex to get so lazy that they force me to stop being so dam lazy and to look at something else. I’m pretty pleased with what I’ve seen so far. SMFH…
Infuse is hands down a much MUCH better player than Plex, but it misses so much other stuff. No multi user, difficult to use when away from home, no trailers, no discover… the list goes on. Just wish Plex could implement the same playback ability that infuse has, but I think you’re right, we’re flogging a dead horse.
But you don’t. Yes you get the better player by using infuse, but it doesn’t support multiple users. I don’t want to have to use 2 clients to get all features either!
Infuse is a no-go for me because of the way it has to scan in the library and store its own database. If it would simply act as a Plex client and let the Plex server handle all the database operations, I would likely switch over. But the way it is no, downloading the database and artwork takes a lifetime (I have a very large database). So Infuse is pretty much useless.
Been experimenting with both ATV Plex and Infuse clients and so far the results are more realistic visuals on the plex client
BUT
The audio is lagging on my Airpods Pro Max on the Plex client while not on the Infuse client. This is playing 4K HDR content so it seems they have come quite far but due to the audio lag issue I’m using Infuse, which I would like to avoid
I think that since Plex finally after a year got DV to actually play at all, they consider the issue fixed. There’s not really been any further responses. If all Plex pass users were affected by the issue to the extent that their bottom line suffered, they would probably resolve it. It’s just not a priority any more - they seem to be more inclined towards their own streaming stuff.
I’ve had my money’s worth out of my Plex lifetime sub - I was a fairly early adopter. If I was paying monthly, I’d be cancelling and going to Infuse despite its shortcomings, because after all playback quality probably trumps all of the other Plex quality of life features.
yes but for some reason it has to download metadata locally within the app. and sometimes it just loses the data and has to do it all over again. it’s a pain.
Infuse fails to play converted MEL DV (HDR10 P5 dvh1) even with the latest 7.4.5 build. Apple’s native player, PLEX and other 3rd party player play it fine.
He’s talking about when you make a DV P8 from P7 (either MEL or FEL) and make it ‘fake P5’ (just tags it as P5 in metadata/container - RPU info/format is all P8 still) using mp4box
Apple DV screensavers are natively in this P8>‘fake P5’ format
Oh yeah. Woah. Thanks. Those files are deeply weird. Without an explanation of how DV P5 and HDR10 can be reconciled with each other, those files probably shouldn’t be treated as a reference example of anything. Or used to judge Plex or Infuse behavior.
And looking at the spreadsheet - is it just the very oldest files that are so weird? Have they all been replaced with “normal” ones now?
It’s the only way to play profile 8 and Bluray DV on Apple platform for now.
