[FEATURE REQUEST] Dolby Vision support for MKV on Apple TV 4K

Taking cues from the Nvidia Shield/Android TV thread regarding Dolby Vision support in MKV, I’m creating an official thread for Apple TV 4K support of the same. So for all of the Apple TV 4K users, apparently the MKV spec is now supporting Dolby Vision encoding (hence the Android TV thread). When can us Apple TV 4K users expect to start seeing Dolby Vision support in the Plex app for iOS?

Let’s do this!

Totally agree. I actually have an NVIDIA Shield Pro 2019 so am looking forward to trying out DV there, but I really want it for my Apple TV4K as well. Would love to know if its coming…

Yes. Just yes

Looking forward to it too…

I have partial DV support on my Android-TV now with the makemkv 1.5.3 implementation.

Looking forward to using my ATV as well!

Correct me if I am wrong but wouldn’t this take Apple supporting such codec in the OS/hardware? Doubtful this would ever happen as much as I want it.

Yep. Only profile 5 is supported and maybe the 8.4 (for the new iPhone 12).

Does Profile 8.4 include Dolby Vision support for the new iPhone 12’s?

Yes.

the iPhone 12 shoots video in a newer version of Dolby Vision called Profile 8.4 that’s built on a standard called HLG, or hybrid log-gamma

I thought this thread was about the Apple TV 4K… Doesn’t that support DV? Certainly for streaming but maybe it’s different from local MKV files?

Yea, obviously Apple TV 4K supports Dolby Vision (and Atmos). But Plex won’t decode Dolby Vision (or Atmos) on Apple TV 4K. Hence the feature request…

I’m pretty sure that before plex could do MKV+DV on ios, that APPLE would have to support MKV+DV in the IOS.

Perhaps, but that would be Plex corporation’s job to work out. I’m sure their administration can reach out to Apple and continue to request the support. Especially if they have threads like this with the Plex community requesting it.

hah, if you think plex has any sway over apple’s decisions, I have a bridge to sell you.

otherwise, consider why there is no truehd pass through on apple tv, and how long has that been requested?

The thing is, WWDC often introduces features on Apple hardware and software when developers request it. Again, it’s not my problem - this is something Plex (and the maker of the MKV spec) needs to work out. Making it known we all want it can only help more than harm, IMHO.

Sure, customer feedback is how all products improve.

I just wouldn’t advise anyone to hold their breath on this, or truehd support on apple.

I’m not trying to be negative, just realistic. Apple wants you to use apple content, or streaming content from supported providers.

None of which need or want dv/mkv, or truehd/atmos.

DV is supported on Apple TV 4k, it’s supported at the Apple TV App, it’s supported on Disney+ and on Netflix.

So in generall Apple TV supports Dolby Vision and this depends on the app, as the Server decodes the MKV or whatever content Apples doesn’t know the source as it is a part of the Plex Client App on Apple TV to display the stream from the Server.

So the player needs to be modifiyed to trigger DV instead of HDR at the moment.

DV INSIDE MKV is not… though, and that is where it would likely require support from apple.

If the container is the problem, that could be solved by direct streaming

And Direct Play is what you want anyway - IMHO.
