Plex (docker) dropping GPU as transcode device

OS: debian (buster)

I’ve experienced this a couple of times now since I updated to newest version.

All of the sudden, I hear the cpu fans ramp up, and when I check Tautulli, most of the transcoding is done by the CPU instead of the GPU.

Plex dashboard shows no activity on CPU and RAM (doesn’t show anything at all).

I ran htop to check CPU load, and it was pretty high (usually its at a minimum, since the GPU does the work).
nvidia-smi showed 3 jobs (which was also reported as HW transcodes by Tautulli).

I’ve had to restart the docker to have it start using the GPU again - but I’m wondering what’s causing this. I tried reproducing the error without success, it appears a bit random…

Subtitles will throw you off every time.

DEBUG logs which capture a failure will really help diagnosing the problem.
