Plex Does Not "See" MP4 Files In Library

I had TV shows saved on my NAS as MKV files and Plex could “see” them in my library. I converted them to MP4 and Plex went blind! re-scanning the library/folder does no good. The files are encoded properly because they play using other media players without any issues. Please advise.

I’m converting some of the mp4 files back to mkv to see if Plex “sees” them again.

could you briefly elaborate on what exactly you did as for “converting them to MP4 and Plex went blind!”?

Do you have local media assets enabled and Use embedded metadatachecked for this library? If so, please check what embedded Title the files have – Plex might actually see the files but match them against the embedded title instead of the file name and show as something entirely different or duplicates of another movie.

That exists only in music libraries.

The equivalent action for video libraries is this:
Go to

  • Settings - Server - Agents - Shows - TheTVDB

In there, grab the line ‘Local Media Assets’ with your mouse and drag it downwards, so it ends up being at the bottom of the stack of active agents.
Repeat the same under

  • Settings - Server - Agents - Shows - TheMovieDatabase
  • Settings - Server - Agents - Movies - Plex Movie
  • Settings - Server - Agents - Movies - TheMovieDatabase

Since this is a Linux system: have you checked file access permissions? Plex runs under the user account plex on Linux, so if these files are ‘owned’ by your own user account, you need to grant other users permission to access them - at least to ‘read’ them.

thx for the catch – got this confused
