Hi,
Since the last 2 Plex server updates my libraries do not refresh automatically.
The scanner function to find the new files does not give anything.
I have to close the Plex server then restart it to see new files.
I don’t think I have the problem anymore.
It’s like I have a file that got stuck in “to be scanned” mode. I identified the folder, canceled the scan for that folder, and after a big long Library Scan things seem to be back to normal.
I’ll come back here even if the problem recurs.
Regardless of the resolution of my problem, the idea of sharing my raw logs leaves me a bit confused and hesitant
It’s very kind of you to ask me again, I thank you.
I do, if you’re still interested to have them. I grabbed them last week just after the last instance. I tried to DM them to you but was unable to. Is it ok to post publicly?
Of note, the last restart I had to do was on the 9th, and I have not had an issue with new content not updating since then.
There has been some strangeness with scans, but nothing that has resulted in requiring a restart to fix. (Seems like an active ongoing scan of a library, but doesn’t show as running if you check the Library. Instead there is just frequent rapid activity, akin to a micro scan. And then in stops. And then starts again. Over and over and over. But seems to eventually complete. While it is running I can start a full scan, that runs and completes as such. But then the micro scanning of the same library resumes.)
When PMS sees the NFO (IIRC), it will accept that info and instantly call it a match.
It will then go to the (silent) phase 2 of pulling metadata.

To me, this looks like it’s actually scanning for changes and processing them.
The only difference, which you’re not seeing, is the Matching activity in the PMS monitor.
The change in NFOs could definitely be triggering the micro scans. I didn’t realize that NFO file changes would also register, I thought only a change in the media file itself would constitute a library change.
(I’m not even sure why NFO for such an old show are being updated in the first place. I’m attempting to address that separately.)
However, I don’t think the above can be attributed to what was happening last week, which is that new content ceased to be scanned and added at all. And couldn’t even be forced to show up my attempting to manually initiate a Library scan.
However, like I said, since the 9th that doesn’t seem to have been an issue. So perhaps there was something else that was a factor?
Dashboard is currently showing Scanning Movies (and also in Manage > Libraries). However, it doesn’t show the normal progress circle or scrolling list of movies names it does when it is doing an actual scan.
If like me you have hundreds of folders, it’s not easy to target the one on which it is necessary to cancel the scan!
In the meantime I followed the advice given above: I downgraded to the proposed version. This saves me from having to stop and restart Plex all the time!
I just hope that we will have a patch soon (and I will not play to install the last version to systematically uninstall it and become to the old version that I just put back)
I can’t answer in Perplexity’s place, but for me, since I encountered the problem, it happened “by chance” that I came across a directory that offered me to cancel the scan.
The 2 or 3 times I encountered this situation, I cancelled the scan and everything went back to normal. But for users who have tons of folders it’s not possible to check them one by one.
When it happened, it seems to me that there was the activity animation in the top right corner in Plex, but no information about the directories being scanned.
It’s a fake scan, for want of a better description. It says it is scanning, but it is not actually doing anything. There is no actual activity anywhere. Nothing shows in Alerts, or in the Console. A normal real scan has a progress circle in Activity, shows what title is being scanned (and progresses through the library until complete) and if you look in Alerts it will outline as the scan progresses through the library being scanned.
This scan just says Scanning “LIBRARY” but doesn’t seem to be doing anything. But, because I guess it is still considered a scan, new actual scans don’t run because they are waiting on this fake scan to finish. A normal scan takes perhaps a few minutes to complete at most. This scan has now been running for hours.
Queued items are now showing up in the Console.

These will never run until I manually force a Cancel Scan on this endless fake scan. I should also point out, that section 1 (Movies) that is queued, is also that one that is supposedly currently scanning.
If it will help to illustrate the differences, I can grab some screenshots or video clips, it will just take me a little while to put together. Let me know. For now, I’m leaving the fake scan run in case I do need to use it to gather any info.
This may not be the case for others but my Synology stopped scanning for movies. I stopped the Plex service and started it again from the package library and it returned to operational status.
Ah. I’m not actually running on Synology. I originally posted in this thread to cross-reference the other thread that seems to be addressing the same thing.
I’m on a headless bare metal running Debian 10 with CLI access. Everything is running in Docker containers.
Is there a way to get what it is you’re asking for?
Although at some point I’m going to have to Cancel this scan so actual scans can run so I can see my new content.
EDIT: And I guess fake scan is not the best or most accurate description. I think a better name is probably a hung scan. It was a scan that started, but never completed. So now it is hung. At the bottom of my update I actually identified where it was hung.
UPDATE: So the hung scan was still running this morning, and I had to finally cancel it so my new content would appear. As soon as I did, the scans that had been queued ran and all completed within about 5 mins. This included the Movies library that said it had been scanning for the past 24hrs or so.
As expected, this resulted in the Activity showing the progress circle and title list while it was running, and Alerts actually listed the titles as it was scanning through.
I did screenshot a few things before I cancelled, and also after. Plus some video before and during.
I think I was at least able to identify where it was hung, I just don’t know why it hung there. Seems like it was stuck on Coco. Next time it occurs, I know where to go to check to see if it gets stuck at the same point.
