Hanging on Movies library scan

Server Version#: 4.32.2
Player Version#: n/a

I have had an issue the last several weeks where the server gets hung up on scanning the Movies Library. I have tried to find something in the forums, tried scanning all libraries, logging, and looking at logs, but nothing jumps out…to me anyway.

So here is the issue. I keep seeing that Plex is not updating libraries automatically when files are added to ANY library. Each time this has happened, I see that the server is stuck on scanning the Movies LIbrary. The moment I “cancel scan”, immediately everything comes through just fine to any/all libraries. I have tried then going to “Scan All Libraries” and it zips through everything just fine, very quickly. But then the next day, it is snagged again. I can’t seem to catch it. Nonetheless, I have attached the logs after scanning all libraries. But if you want me to try something specific to try to catch this LMK. I am all up-to-date on everything.Plex Media Server Logs_2020-05-10_21-15-38.zip (4.9 MB)

@BigWheel @OttoKerner @darcilicious Hello! The post above from 18 days ago was my first, so perhaps I put it in the wrong place. But I was hoping to get some help. No one has replied yet.

I have this incredible (I think!) process where I have scripts to download trailers for upcoming, randomly pick from them for PreRoll, add all to Radarr/Sonarr for auto-download when available, and more. But alas, it all breaks down because Plex keeps hanging on scans. I’ve discovered that it isn’t just Movies. Sometimes TV shows as well. And not consistent. But I can pretty much be guaranteed that within 24-48 hours of all working smoothly, it hangs. I have no notification or indication, other than getting Radarr/Sonarr had pulled items, but they don’t ever appear in Plex. I go to either Movies or TV Shows to see which it has hung on, click “Cancel Scan”, and magically everything comes in and it works great. Until the next 24 hours or so later.

I’ve perused logs for errors and other oddities and spent hours on this. It’s super frustrating after all the work to make this automatic, and the one thing I actually happily pay $ for (Plex) is the culprit.

Thanks in advance!

Turn off verbose logging in settings and scan again. Verbose logs too much info and it the logs roll over too quickly to see what is going on. Only Debug logging should be enabled.

That said usually something like this is it getting stuck on a particular problem file. often removing the file will let it do it’s thing

@BigWheel OK, thanks for the reply.

Yes, I assumed it was a bad file, but it seemed odd that it works most of the time, plus it is hanging with different libraries.

So, do I change it to Debug from the dropdown on the Console page? Or somewhere else? I’ve done that at this point.

Then what next? Just wait for it to happen again, then save the logs and re-post them?

Thanks again!

In the General settings of your server there is a check box for Debug and a check box for Verbose https://support.plex.tv/articles/200289496-general/#toc-1

Yes, If you cannot invoke it by adding any file and initiating a scan.

Thanks. FYI that that content in that link has changed. It isn’t on the Advanced view of the General page anymore. But I found a “Debug” page with a “Debug Level” dropdown on it with choices of “Disabled”, “Enabled” and “Verbose”. Oddly, it was set to “Disabled”, so not sure why the logs have been showing Verbose. Anyway, I set it to “Enabled”, saved, will keep an eye on it and if/when it hangs again, will post to this thread.

No it hasn’t changed. You are on the web app player settings not the server settings.

Ah, gotcha! I’ve unchecked Verbose and left Debug checked. And turned it back off on the web app player. Thx…

It’s hanging right now. Usually the status doesn’t show anything happening when I have to Cancel Scan. But right now, it IS spinning, and shows it stuck on this below. This is different behavior, so not 100% sure this is the same issue. Aside: That movie has been in there for a long time from back before this issue started.

I reviewed the logs, grepped Rudolph and didn’t see anything odd. (I was hoping to not have to bother you  )

@BigWheel OK, now it is hung again. This time it does what it normally does when it hangs. It just shows “Cancel Scan” on either Moview or “TV Shows”, and the status doesn’t indicate what it’s trying to do. Specifically, this:

As soon as I hit Cancel Scan, it zooms back through everything and it works fine for a while. And again, I can manually scan them again and it does NOT hang.

Thannnnnks !
I have this issue too, since multiple weeks.

I’ve also activated debugging log, but I see nothing special… it’s randomly “hang”, never on the same file, never on the same library… every time there is a new plex server release, I hope to read a fixed issue in the changelog, but it’s seems to be a dream :frowning:

I have to do like you do, click on cancel scan, relaunch one manually and most of the time it works.

Do you think it will help someone if I send you my logs too ?

@toto313 Hi! Yeah, I haven’t heard a word on this yet, so just assuming he’s busy and will get to it. Yeah, I’d say post up your logs too, so when he gets to this perhaps both logs will shed light on the bug. If you’re having the same thing, probably many are, as most won’t go to the effort of posting in a Forum.

FYI I do seem to have found a temporary workaround while waiting. When I had the bug, I had all three Server/Settings/Library checked for scanning:

  1. Scan my library automatically
  2. Run a partial scan when changes are detected, and
  3. Scan my library periodically (every 30 minutes)

I unchecked 2 and 3 and so far it has not hung for the last 5 days! So the bug is probably in one of those two. It certainly does not seem like a bad file, because it would happen on any library, and randomly. But usually within 24 hours. I hope that helps!?

@BigWheel FYI above, when you get time, that multiple people having the same issue, and my temporary workaround. So far so good.

I can’t use your workaround because of the “automatic” detection :frowning:
Personnally, I have only the periodically scan activated.

When I have a new folder in my a library, this folder will be updated multiple times before to be “readable” by Plex (source → RAR → MD5 check → extract).
The automatic Plex detection is pretty efficient for a new folder, because the scan is only done on this folder.
But when a folder is deleted in a library, Plex scan all the library… so not efficient for me because of my server operating (sometimes a lot of deleted folder).

So the best for me is the periodically scan, but seems bugged since some weeks.

Before this post I changed the scan period to 15 minutes to try to force the “hang issue” and post logs, but the server seems to want to sleep, the scan are not starting

I’ll sent you the logs in the next days.

Time to go to bed !

why is it i the folder before it is ready? why not extract it to the proper folder at the end

Because the server operating is like that, there is a lot of change if I want it like you said :face_savoring_food:

And I don’t have the energy for now :see_no_evil_monkey:

Just checked now and the hand issue is present, this is my screenshot and logs.

No news ?
Hope it will be fixed soon

I’ve been having a similar issue for several weeks now but for me it happens with Optimize database. Sometimes, it’s fast and only takes a couple of seconds. Other times, the only solution I’ve found is to stop Plex - I’m using the Plex Service - and restart Plex

Some new release but nothing about this issue :frowning:
Is there a work in progress for this ? Do you need some logs or whatever to permit you to debug ?
Thanks.

Problem still present for me… Plex 1.20.0.3181.
Anyone ? no news ? why ?
