The Plex Download experience was bad before the update, but with patience and tinkering, you could sometimes make it work. Somehow, with the “new” experience, Plex is teaching me new ways to swear with its broken download feature. It is so bad that I don’t know if these features were tested before shipping to customers
Here are a list of issues:
- First of all, the media files that were downloaded are not ported over correctly. Some files couldn’t be opened, some files can be played but without subtitles
- Downloaded files do not guarantee playability. I am not sure if this is an issue with transcoding or unfinished download showing up as finished. But sometimes, files that you downloaded would randomly decline to be played. This is very frustrating when you load up on shows before a trip just to find out that they won’t be played
- What happened to bulk downloading? Why are downloaded files not sorted in folders or shows? Is this acceptable UX in 2025?
- Download would randomly fail or stop mid-way through without any real reason.
- App is significantly slower and would crash out if a download is going on or if a download has failed
I don’t really expect any of these features to be fixed any time soon, so consider this a venting post until some customer support or devs are willing to talk about these issues
