It has been about a year since the big new Plex experience rolled out, and it is still hopelessly, ridiculously broken.
I purchased my lifetime Plex Pass nearly twelve years ago for the express purpose of downloading media to my laptop for travel. A lot about Plex has changed in the time, but one thing has not. The Plex developers apparently love to break core features in the name of progress and then spend months telling (or not telling) us that they are working on fixing them. Unfortunately the latest problems with the android app seem to be setting new bars for how badly they can break stuff and how long they will take to fix their mistakes.
I’ve been having trouble downloading content to my android tablet for months. (Check my post history if you doubt me.) I have big trip coming up in a few weeks so I’ve started loading content on my tablet for the trip. Of course, this is not going smoothly or I would not be making this post.
At first, I was happy when I checked app updates and saw that Plex had an update. I installed the update and started downloading. Unfortunately, it only took a minute before I was disappointed. The first TV show I tried to download revealed that they still haven’t improved the fundamental download function. Still no option to DL the series, have to do it by season or episode, and no option for different numbers of episodes.
But wait, it gets even worse. Once I started adding more TV seasons or movies, I started encountering items that simply will not DL. I’ve been able to DL several TV seasons, then the next season I try to add just won’t DL. It stays in the queue and says Waiting forever. I can retry, but nothing changes. So far all four movies I have tried did the same, the just say waiting and never DL.
To make sure there isn’t something wrong with the files, I checked and confirmed that I was able to watch the movies in question.
I also still have more than 150GB of space available so no issue there.
I have tried restarting the app, and also the tablet, but it doesn’t help. I reset the Plex cache, also with no improvement.
This garbage has me actively looking at alternatives to Plex. I only wish I didn’t have a lifetime plex pass so that it would actually take a bit of my money out of their pocket when I leave.
