does anyone use this setup? how exactly does it work, can you use plex to directly control the 3 tuners and do its own dvr functions and leave out the built in stuff on the homerun? how well does the guide and channel scan work with this. I am considering ditching some of my online services and going back to xfinity if this will work just like it does with my OTA tuner card, I could sign up with no xfinity equipment, their website mentions you can get a cablecard from them, any advice from current users, it could replace ps vue which is going up and also my hulu live tv, and I could get an awesome package.
I would want plex to handle everything and just use the homerun as a remote tuner basically, I want no external drives on it for dvr or media database, I want to utilize the massive 30tb of space I have in my system to its fullest.
I have this exact setup with Xfinity. I freaking love it, but it has been a bumpy ride, for a time guide data was not coming through properly, but currently running the latest Plex server and it works wonderfully.
I am not in love with the guide, it is show based, not channel based, and that might be because of copyright issues, but you can search for any show and setup a “season pass” for that show and it will record. The recordings however are large as they are not compressed much. Originally it was recording to .ts files or straight Mpeg files, now it seems they have changed it to a .mkv file, and the compression is a little better.
But it has worked for me, very well so far. You can only watch livetv on iOS or Android TV which I hope Roku will be out soon. I use both the Roku and Rasplex to output to my televisions in my house. But the quality is wonderful, and it is very nice to have a one stop TV solution in my house without having to change from one Video to another.
So far I give it a 7/10, and could easily get to 9/10 with more Live TV support. I will never give it a 10/10 but that is purely because the guide is a tad combersome.
To answer some of your questions. Plex just finds the Prime, it literally just finds it, sees three tuners, and does everything itself, you do not need the SiliconDust software at all, just the hardware. I was able to get a 5 dollar credit every month, as I do not have a single tuner, just a cable card. But you just call Xfinity setup service, and tell them you want a cable card, and if it is your only Reciever, it is 100% free.
Plex handles everything, and I mean everything. Put it on your network, and search for it with Plex, that simple. I only have 8TB, and I have plenty of space, you could be recording until you are blue in the face basically with 30Tb.
Greatest thing, want more tuners, just buy another prime, and get another cable card, and you now have 6 tuners, it just shows up as a second device in Plex. I haven’t needed to do this, but it will just work.
Just remember that PLEX does not do DRM so saying you do no need the HDHomerun software is not always true as the HDHomerunView in Windows 10 is the only thing besides WMC that can view DRM. Everybody forgets about DRM.

Xbox One HDHomerun app can view DRM channels as well.
