I truly understand that the Plex DVR feature is a work-in-progress. I tried moving my DVR features from Windows Media Center (on Windows 7) to Plex…and getting the wife to see the benefit…and failing.
Things that are good:
- Records in a much higher resolution without picture degradation
- Does a fairly good job detecting commercials and removing them
Things that need work: - When you want to watch something that is being recorded, it should be clear what is being recorded and to be able to watch it. I’ve seen shows being recorded that do not have the red dot(s) on them. Finding the recordings is difficult in an icon format…especially when the show is about to start or has just ended.
- When a show is having the commercials removed, it isn’t even available to be found anywhere until some 40 minutes later…when it magically appears in TV Shows library. Trying to find it in TV Shows or even a status of it anywhere would be good. I would still watch commercials (even if I skip them) rather than not having the option to watch the show at all. I had to turn commercial removal off for this very reason. I spent too much time trying to figure out what happened to the show that I know it recorded disappeared off to.
- Commercial removal is probably a bad idea if it wrongly removes a portion of your show (like it has in some cases). Instead, you should put pointers to commercials and have Plex skip past those pointers. Need option to turn commercial pointer skip on/off while a show is playing. This is how COMSKIP (used with Windows Media Center) works…and is the same software that you are using (from what I read).
- Voice sync is not 100%…and especially gets off track with commercial removal. Starting and stopping the show helps, but is still off and gets progressively worse.
- Under the scheduled recordings section, you should indicate that the show is being recorded and be able to start playing it directly from that screen.
- Plex Media Player still doesn’t have access to DVR until it is done recording and show is thrown into a library? What to use for Windows 10 clients who want to watch live TV?
- Get the grid view option in place. I know you are working on this!
This is important because it is a messy solution to view pages of icons (i.e. Watch Now, Shows coming up, New Shows tonight, etc.). Need to simplify…
