Plex DVR records show, then it is immediately deleted

I’m seeing some interesting behavior - I’ve got a show that set to record (new and repeats) and for the last few days I see the show recording but never see it available to watch. Today I discovered them in the computer’s trash:

-rw-r–r--@ 1 tfulmer admin 8.0K Aug 9 20:00 .Trash/.DS_Store
-rw-r–r-- 1 tfulmer admin 2.0G Aug 7 20:00 .Trash/Jeopardy (1984) - S33E48 - Teen Tournament Week 2.mkv
-rw-r–r-- 1 tfulmer admin 2.0G Aug 8 20:00 .Trash/Jeopardy (1984) - S33E49 - Teen Tournament Week 2.mkv
-rw-r–r-- 1 tfulmer admin 2.0G Aug 9 20:00 .Trash/Jeopardy (1984) - S33E50 - Teen Tournament Week 2.mkv

I’m the only user so I wonder if somehow Plex is deleting them - anyone seen anything like this?

Could be similar issue to mine (forums.plex.tv/discussion/282667/episode-retention-based-on-air-date-from-metadata#latest
Did you have it set to delete after 30 days or similar?

Yes! That explains it…I guess “it’s not a bug” is a matter of perspective…certainly if a human being did that (recorded, then immediately deleted it) you’d want to retrain them not to so something so obviously wrong. Thanks mcqweb!!

I changed my setting to “Keep all episodes” and it’s still recording and immediately deleting…

Did you change the setting for the show in the library or just the recording setting? Garbage Collection uses Library setting for show.

Okay, just checked and in the Advanced settings for the program in the library I have “keep” set to “all episodes” and “Delete episodes after watching” set to “never”. Is there anything else I should be looking at?

What does the Plex Media Server log file show after the recording ended? Is there a Garbage Colllecrion entry in the log for the show?

DVR:Grabber: Operation for Jeopardy! - E111 - College Championship: Week 1, Washington, D.C. completed with status complete (Success)

So there is a delete policy somewhere of 7 days for the show.

I’m having the exact same issue with my recordings of Jeopardy. The moment the show ends at 7:30pm, it’s instantly and automatically in the trash! I have checked and re-cheked all my setting and it’s set to keep until “the end of time.” I can manually put the show into my library, but even with a correct folder “Jeopardy (1984)” no metadata is populated. Additionally, I’m sure nobody, myself included, wants have to go thought this process just to watch my daily Jeopardy episode

@hf995 you probably have a policy on the show in the library for either keep or delete after watching.

@johnm_ColaSC Thanks for the tip, that would have been the 2nd place I’d have looked. There’s only one problem, that the settings screen if you have existing episodes of a show. Because the episodes are, and have always been, instantly deleted, I can’t get to that screen. The only setting available for me to adjust are in the “recording schedule/recording priority” section:

I manually created a show folder for the deleted episodes in my library “Jeopardy (1984)” which I assume is correct based on how the show records. As I mentioned previously, the shows load to my library after dragging from my trash, but there is no metadata. I adjusted the setting in the manual show folder just for the hell of it I’ll have to see if tonight recording go into my manual folder or is my server decided not to recolonize it and just trash it…

One other thing I have mentioned on other threads with this same deletion issue is to take a recording from another show that is a new airing. Change the naming convention to match an episode of the show you are having issues with and copy it into your library in the appropriate location. This has allowed others to modify the show settings in the library.

John - I really appreciate your expertise and help, so don’t take this next personally - but the steps necessary to resolve this issue mean (to me, at least) there’s a bug in here somewhere. I would argue the this record/delete thing shouldn’t even be happening, but if there is a way to set up things so that it does, the software needs to warn the user and/or have a way to resolve it without a lot of gymnastics.

I love PLEX and the DVR function but this is a rare (again, to me at least) fumble.

I have mentioned in other threads that this does seem to be an issue/bug. When you are setting up a recording if you choose any deletion policies Plex seems to set the policy on the Library settings for the show but if you later change the recording setting does not modify the setting in the library appropriately. So absolutely users are left with having to manually get a recording into the Library so they can modify the show settings. I personally do not set any deletion policies on recordings and keep just about everything recorded, except for news shows which are deleted manually after watching.

Thumbs up to John’s response!

Also, for the record I appear to have resolved the record/delete issue on my plex dvr

/Users/tfulmer/TV Shows/Jeopardy (1984)/Season 33/Jeopardy (1984) - S33E114 - College Championship Week 1 Washington D.C .mkv

Ted, can you explain how you resolved for others that have similar issues?

Copy a new aired episode of any show recorded, change the name to match the show you are seeing deleted. Copy newly named file to library and let Plex find it. Once it shows in library edit the library settings to keep all episodes and never delete. Then remove file copied. Problem is caused when setting up recording and choosing to delete after x days. Plex changes library settings when recording is setup but does not appear to change them if recording modified in the future.

In my situation, regularly scheduled show record properly, but sports such as football games where it is more of a one off instead of a series is where I run into issues. I can see the recording during the broadcast, but in the end there is no recorded game.
