Plex DVR Setup Advice

Hi, I can’t seem to find a solid answer in the support section to something I’m curious about. I know Plex can record live tv via an OTA antenna and a device like HD Homerun. However, can I operate it through something other than my PC, like a FireTV or Roku? Basically, I want the ability to DVR live shows from my antenna and watch it on my tv without the need of a computer. Everything I find online tells me how to use my PC to watch and record live tv.

Before I buy a device like the HD Homerun I want to make sure I’m clear on how it all works. I currently have a FireTv, Roku and PS4. I have the Plex Pass, a nice OTA antenna and an external hard drive. What do I need to get to hook all this together and get live TV and DVR? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

This and many other questions are answered in the links in this post pinned near the top of this forum:

For example, a list of client apps/hardware compatible with Live TV / DVR is the second entry in this FAQ: https://support.plex.tv/articles/226463767-frequently-asked-questions-dvr-live-tv/

Thank you. I had read over that but I checked it out again and I think I got it now. Where do I connect the external hard drive? To the Firetv or does it matter?

I believe recordings will be stored on any hard drives associated with the computer where you have the Plex media server installed.

You need to have Plex Media Server running on something. (PC, NAS, Shield…). You can’t DVR straight from the HDHomerun to a firestick, Roku etc.

Thanks, I appreciate the info. I usually have Plex running on an old laptop that I don’t use for anything but that. I also have an NAS that I’m hoping I can as a DVR. We shall see. I have the Homerun on the way. Can’t wait.
