Has tuner/device “sharing” between Plex and other clients changed/improved since Plex DVR/Live TV came about?
Back story:
I have a couple of HDHomeRun PRIMEs on my network, and use Plex for recording and Android TV’s ‘Live Channels’ for viewing live on each of our TVs (WAF ). When I originally got everything set up, I noticed that Plex wasn’t aware of tuners in use by ‘Live Channels’, so sometimes I’d get failed recordings, etc. There was no way for Live Channels to select particular devices to use (it found them all) and every now and then Plex would try to grab a tuner that was already in use by one of our TVs. I ended up putting each HDHomeRun device on a separate network, so they couldn’t see each other…it fixed the problem, but it’s a waste of tuners dedicating them out like that…
I’m considering going OTA and putting my two HDHomeRun CONNECTs back in the mix (replacing the PRIMEs), but I’ll be losing two tuners…can I put the CONNECTs on the same network as Plex and my TVs, and have all of the devices just use the four tuners as they see fit? Will Plex know that one of my TVs has the tuner locked, and to find a different one?
Short answer No. If Plex tries to use one of the Connects to record and The Live Channels app has that device in use then the Connect will reject the stream request from Plex and the recording will be aborted.
That’s unfortunate. Looks like I’ll be buying a new CONNECT QUATRO to dedicate to Plex, and keep the 2x CONNECTs on a different VLAN so they don’t see each other…a total of 8 tuners on the network, just so Plex will be able to record 3 shows at a time…wasteful…

Plex doesn’t seem to try different tuners when it gets rejected, it just immediately aborts the recording. I have four tuners (2 hdhomeruns with 2 tuners each) and if someone is using the hdhomerun app with one tuner Plex will start aborting recordings left and right.
I would like to raise my voice in order to help to make that a feature. In my case, I want (need) to share the same DVR tuner between different PMS (!)
