How does the DVR handle a tuner that is already in use?

I’m running Plex / DVR on a Ubuntu / Linux computer, I feed it with two HD Homerun Connects (4 total tuners).

What I haven’t been able to find is what will Plex DVR due if when it starts to record a program and the tuner is already in use (say by another computer using the HD Homerun TV app). Will it abort the recording, take the tuner away from the other user, or move on to the next tuner automatically?

And the reverse, if Plex DVR is already recording a show on a tuner, will the HD Homerun TV App automatically choose a different tuner? (I realize this second question is not actually a “Plex” question, but I thought someone here might now).

Thanks!

If a tuner is being used by some other app the tuner device sends Plex a rejection for access to the tuner. I assume that the reverse would be true as well if Plex was using a tuner and some other app requested a tuner. The tuner device is accepting or rejecting the request, not Plex.

Is it safe to assume that Plex will move on to the next tuner when it gets a “rejection” and not cancel the recording?

I now Plex is smart enough to use separate tuners if more then one recording is scheduled at once.

Thanks for your help.

Plex does not try other tuner devices if multiple devices are configured. Plex assumes it has exclusive access to devices configured in DVR.

That is a shortcoming of PLEX the reason I only test it once in a while and will not use it as a full home DVR… and would not recommend it if using HdHomerun network tuners that you share with other APPS.

Emby, HdhomeRun and SageTV have no problem sharing tuners with other Apps.

Bummer, I rarely need more than two tuners for my recording, I might just take one out of the set and use the for my other applications.
