PLEX DVR - Tuning comskip.ini - What are some changes that people are making to the default?

After reviewing the COMSKIP TUNING DOCUMENT, I found a few settings that could use a slight tweak from the default.

NOTE: I am located in North America, and this setting change is recommended for this region only.

First, there was the intelligent_brightness setting. The comments in the .ini file provided by PLEX, along with the tuning document, recommend changing this to 1. The tuning document also recommends changing the max_volume setting to 0.

What other tweaks have you found helpful?

For the most part it has done ok. It’ll cut right during the first 2/3rds to 3/4 of the file then leaves a commercial break. So, I have been adjusting the commercial and show lengths.

Max commercialbreak from 600 to 450
min commercial size from 4 to 10

I have been searching for a while and figured this would be a good place to ask you as you are tuning…
is comskip that is provided with Plex DVR… is it the full version? What I am asking is that I am using MCEBuddy and Comskip (both paid versions) and donating to Comskip has dropped my conversion time from 9h to 40 minutes. I know this is in MCEBuddy but I haven’t tried a recording in Plex yet and just trying to get an understanding if plexpass is giving us the “Faster” donated version or if not… if we can provide one ourself.

thanks and hope I didn’t lose ya much… just started the caffeine bottle!

It seems to run pretty fast, so I don’t think it can be the free version.

I didn’t look much but I did the remove commercials and it did but still created a huge 2gb .ts file… so I’m still seeing a need for mcebuddy to convert the file to make it “manageable”

It is the “donator” version.

./Plex\ Commercial\ Skipper
Comskip 0.81.098, made using ffmpeg
Donator build

I don’t think the version makes a difference. Only CPU/RAM utilization should matter. I am noticing that it takes about 10-20 minutes for a show to complete commercial removal process and appear in my library.

Comskip is only responsible for marking where the commercials are in the recorded video. Plex then takes that information and transcodes the information to create a new output file. In my instance, Comskip reviews the mpg file that is saved from the TVTUNER. Then, using the output from COMSKIP, it creates a new .ts file that is published to the library.

thread_count=XX

add that and set the number of threads to a number less than the threads your server has to speed up the commercial cutting process, by default only 4 threads will process i believe.

MCEBuddy put a bigger strain than Plex currently is. The end result is still the same. But MCE did have an issue when dealing with .ts.

Going to try transcoding the recording.

Changing the detect method, has nearly got me there. Logo, scene change, aspect ratio, silence, and cut scene are all checked. I’m starting to think that these setting should be set first to get close then others can be modified to fine tune the accuracy.

What is your detect_method set at? Mine is set at 43. I probably don’t understand the syntax.

If you are running on a Windows computer and can access to ComskipINIEditor it explains the options for the detect_method. I have mine set at 107.

The only reason I use mce buddy is it converts the .ts to hevc mkv Plex does not.

Thanks! I’m on a mac, using the post process PlexComSkip in terminal to test the variables.

Mostly commercial skipping has been ok, but SHIELD it’s been extremely poor. Unfortunately, my last 3 tests, it thinks it cut too much and therefor won’t cut anything.

I found an episode of Agents of Shield to test changes to comskip.ini with, as that show has been unwatchable with bad cuts. I finally have an .ini that’s not too bad but could be better.

Problem 1 - ABC puts their logo in their promos.

Problem 2 - Show logo doesn’t always come back for up to 30 seconds in the show.

I’ve got something tuned right where it is finding the correct edge of the show, but then cuts 15-20 seconds until the logo, sometimes.

Any thoughts on what else I should look for?

I noticed the same thing and now have the logo unmarked.

I’ve got at least 4 comskip.ini’s that I’ve used with some level of success. Problem is, they’re all for the same show. Sometimes one works nearly perfect for one episode, but is too aggressive on another. I’m surprised there isn’t much of an active community around comskip tuning, neither here nor on the comskip forums.

After testing this feature for the past 3 months, I have found that I definitely need to have the ability to use different comskip.ini files depending on the show/network. I hope that the ability to do this eventually gets added to the product. Is anyone aware of a way to do this behind the scenes?

I haven’t messed with my .ini file lately, but the results have varies with the same shows. It makes me wonder if it is comskip that marks the file incorrectly or if Plex is cutting incorrectly. Because some cuts seem to be in the middle of blocks comskip would group as a section and not a cutpoint.
