Plex Employee to Reset Server Certificate? "API rate limit exceeded" error

Hi,

after reseting my password, with reset all sessions and enabling 2F auth. I had to reclaim the server.
And now I can’t start the server anymore and logs show the error : <error code="1003" message="API rate limit exceeded" status="429"/>.
As I’ve seen on this thread it might be on your end, could you reset my cert please ?

Thanks in advance

EDIT : it’s back it was able to pull the cert it’s working again. thanks

After resetting my password today and enabled 2fa, devices initially logged back in fine. I’m curre tly trying to set up my kids’ tablets again and I’m encountering the “API rate limit exceeded error” when trying to log in.

Can you please look at this for my server?

Hi, after password reset I can’t start the server (only local access) and am seeing this message in my logs:
TimeAug 24, 2022 20:51:29.432
LevelError
Thread12364
MessageCERT: Error acquiring new certificate: Failed to upload CSR: 429, <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>

Can you reset my server certificate please?

Hello,

question for the Plex employees. Is this api rate limit exceeded error really something that needs to be fixed by a human?
Typically API limits would reset automatically and I would expect it working again after a while.

Is there a timer (or the actual rate limit) with the Plex API and after what time should access work again?

I too seem to be having this API rate limit issue getting cert. Recently had to re-claim server with the password reset and now I can’t access the server remotely.

Edit: it was finally able to pull the cert and works now

Original:
Hi, after the password reset and claiming, I can access plex outside of my local network, but accessing it while on the local network (via webapp or apple tv or phone) won’t work. I see the same error message so I’m not sure if it’s related:

CERT: Certificate did not exist, fetching a new one.

CERT: Error acquiring new certificate: Failed to upload CSR: 429, <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <errors> <error code="1003" message="API rate limit exceeded" status="429"/> </errors>

I’ve managed to get my remote clients to connect after the F&Gs (fun and games, yo) around the password change (kudos for that transparency, btw), but I still cannot connect securely via the web app on my local network unless I’m using the server’s private IP.

What’s weird, is that though all the client functionality remains, before too long, the browser based access to the server stops working. Like the http server had shut down.

Luckily for me, PlexDash is still dishing info on my server and I keep seeing an error about a failure to acquire a new certificate with a CSR: 429 thrown in for good measure. That brought me here where I learned about API-locked certificates for the first time!

Any chance I could get you to have a look at my cert?

When I saw this error and did not see it go away after having Plex stopped for about 12 hours, I did the following steps to resolve it.

  • Stopped Plex
  • Removed Preferences.xml
  • Started Plex

Since the Preferences file does not contain too much things, I decided to try this. After Plex was started and I logged in to the ip from the local network, the setup wizard was there. Used the same server name and then it showed all the existing libraries.
Last step was to pin the libraries again and configure some server settings.

Not the most ideal, but still better than some manual steps by someone else.

I wish I had been brave enough to try that. I found a post about removing certain parms from it, but it didn’t succeed. It would appear as if @ChuckPa (or a cohort, maybe?) sprinkled some magic tech-dust on my account because 5ish minutes after I posted, everything started working like it was before the password reset. Maybe if I had just delete the prefs altogether, it would have worked.

I too am having problems renewing my certificate for a secure connection:

I was wondering if you could reset my connection as well?

Can I get my server certificate reset? I am getting the “unable to connect to ‘Shield’ securely” error and I am unable to access my plex server on my Nvidia Shield.

Have a look at my steps above, in case you do not want to wait for anyone.

Yea, I am not sure how to do that on my Shield unless I download a file manager application.

I will try that though. Thanks for the help.

@ChuckPa, can I please get some help troubleshooting my server. I am unable to connect to my ‘Shield’ securely. I am using a Nvidia Shield and I have tried everything I know to do and troubleshooted with Nvidia and I need to try to get my certificate reset before Nvidia will escalate. I have uninstalled and reinstalled both the plex app and media server app multiple times and I have tried a factory reset with no luck. I have been working on this for the past 2 weeks with no success. Please let me know if you can reset my server certificate or if there is anything I can try.

@mashie2

I can see in your Plex.tv info that you did have a lot of trouble with the shield.
I think I counted 8 or 9 different attempts to install to it?

With the current installation you have (about 8 hours ago as of this post)
there is no limiting active. It might have cleared itself naturally

Would you GENTLY give it a try? (Be certain to do a proper restart and a fresh reload of the browser window you’re wanting to connect to it from)

@ChuckPa

Hello, after the password reset, connected devices sign-out, then reclaiming, my “Plex Server Log” is full of the getting the “[14332] ERROR - CERT: Error acquiring new certificate: Failed to upload CSR: 429” and “error code=‘1003’ message=‘API rate limit exceeded’ status=‘429’” errors.

Could you please reset my cert as well? Thanks!

@ChuckPa, I did a restart on my Nvidia Shield and I was going to try it with a fresh browser like you suggested, but now I am getting an error where the server is not being recognized at all.

My usual “fix” for this is to uninstall and reinstall the plex media server application, but I figured I would see what you have to say before I do.

There is also a bug that I have got where server says running, but if I stop it, I am unable to start it again without the uninstall of the plex media server app.

@JTWMCA

  1. The certificate was stuck “GENERATING”. Fixed. Restart the server. Reload the players

  2. 3 other long-since dead server entried – Removed
