Plex Employee to Reset Server Certificate? "API rate limit exceeded" error

@ChuckPa - Apologies, realized that I didn’t include my logs when posting. I’m also seeing the error:

Jul 09, 2021 12:06:14.052 [0x7f0104f5cb38] ERROR - CERT: Error acquiring new certificate: Failed to upload CSR: 429, <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>

@nrrogers

Certificate reset. You may restart the server.

Thanks again @ChuckPa

Everything is currently working but I’ve looked in my logs (attached) and it looks like I’m regularly seeing the following:
CERT: Certificate did not exist, fetching a new one.

It then takes multiple attempts to retrieve a new certificate:
CERT: Downloaded new cert from plex.tv; took 12 tries.

Not sure if this helps but thought I’d check if this was at all expected behaviour?

@leo632

There clearly is something going on with your host.

This is not normal behavior whatsoever.

I checked your logs and with the certificates folks.

The retries are because it’s asking for a certificate but timing out (not getting it downloaded) and tries again.

More and more, since this isn’t a common event, I suspect either:

  1. PMS server installation (in your shield) issue
  2. Network issue from the Shield to Plex.tv

Accidentally deleted my previous post, but can I get my cert reset as well?

@kevinwchen26

Cerficate reset. you may restart the server

Thanks for the info. I also didn’t understand why the certificate didn’t exist in the first place. I can’t see anything wrong with the network set up and it appears to be getting through eventually so I’ll try factory resetting the shield in case it’s an installation issue and see if that makes a difference.

Leo,
Thanks. There is definitely something whacky there.

Hi @ChuckPa
So I got round to resetting the shield, set everything up again and immediately getting the same things appearing in the log:

CERT: Downloaded new cert from plex.tv; took 12 tries.

So I guess that wasn’t the problem.

I’d really appreciate any other advice you might have for what could be causing this?

Hey @ChuckPa

I’m having the same problem on my server:

Jul 18, 2021 18:31:26.197 [0x7f413675ab38] ERROR - CERT: Error acquiring new certificate: Failed to upload CSR: 429, <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<errors>
  <error code="1003" message="API rate limit exceeded"/>
</errors>

Is this something you can check on?

Thanks

So, it seems that I’ve joined this club. :slight_smile:
I’m getting this error now. I’ve rebooted my router and qnap nas, and plex server (couple times)…

MessageCERT: Error acquiring new certificate: Failed to upload CSR: 429, <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>

Hey Chuck!

I’ve also got the error I think. It happened spontaneously today and I’ve been googling all day.

Hope you can help me!

Thanks!

looks like I’m affected as well.

Hi I am having the same issue my web will not work says cant connect secure but can browse to my private address. Can you please reset my cert on your end?

I just ran into this problem after moving my library to another computer. Server name is GANON.

Sorry to pile on but I’m also getting TLS handshake errors. In addition to not being able to connect to my server remotely, when I manually browse to my server locally using SSL I get certificate errors. Can I have my cert reset too?

Edit: Could it be that this is related to the ongoing partial Plex DNS outage? Thinking that the clients might not be able to resolve the obfuscated name in the cert and maybe that’s my problem.

I have same issue can you reset
app.plex.tv is unable to connect to “Plex” securely

Hi guys

I appear to have the same issue as well, could I get my cert reset as well please?

Thanks.

For everyone who just started experiencing this problem: There is currently a partial Plex DNS outage, and it very well might be affecting us. Just in case, keep an eye on the status of the outage here:
