Plex external connection issues since last night?

Hi fellow plex fans!

I’d appreciate your assistance/insight in to my current issue.

My Plex is on a QNAP NAS, with Plex Pass, running 0.9.16.6 and has been working without issue for months. However last night some friends reported that my server had gone down. When I checked it, the Server reported “not available outside your network”.

I’ve rebooted both router and NAS multiple times today, and have checked the configuration end to end. I usually use a manually specified port and map that port on my router myself, so I’ve tried unpicking that config to use UPNP, and putting it back to manually defined. I’ve changed port numbers (on both the router and the Plex settings), and it’s still not working.

Canyouseeme confirms that “it” can see me on port 32400 and the ISP isn’t blocking it.

I’ve tried signing out and in to the plex account again, to no avail.

On one or two occasions it has reported that it’s connected for a second or two then has dropped back to not connected.

To me, everything points at a problem at the Plex cloud end, but the service status pages are not reporting any issues.

I’m at a loss to know where to go next! Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

JC.

Ok, I think I might have a clue what’s going on. If I hit https://plex.tv/pms/servers manually, the resulting XML lists my own server with the wrong public facing IP address. Not sure how this list gets updated, but I assume the Plex Servers are trying to hit my own server using this wrong IP, so could whatever secret sauce that links the actual servers to the addresses returned in that XML file be misbehaving?

Here’s what I see - (I’ve redacted the IP’s and other servers from the list!)

Here’s some screencaps of the relevant areas:

firewall on the qnap blocking the 32400 port ?

Hi Starbetrayer,

Unfortunately not, I can telnet to the QNAP on 32400 successfully, and the playback works over the local network, it’s purely remote access that’s the problem.

I’ve checked the firewall settings anyway, and they’re’s definitely nothing blocking it on the QNAP.

Very interesting, it’s just burst in to life as of 10 mins ago, and started working again! I’ve not changed anything whatsoever in that time, but going to the https://plex.tv/pms/servers URL again, my entry is now showing the correct IP address.

So I can’t explain what happened or why. It seems to me as though the faeries may have fixed something in the background!

But a good tip if anyone has similar issues, check that the URL above is returning the correct public IP for your server!
