Plex Files Unavailable but they’re not missing

Nice find!

I can confirm adding smbd to full disk access has passed preliminary testing. I’m going to keep my finder windows closed for now and see how subsequent auto scans perform.

Something to note, on my Mac at least… smbd was not even in the list for full disk access. The linked article above makes it seem like it should be there, but toggled off. I’m also not sure I even had it in there pre-sequoia. If anyone needs to add it, I found it under /usr/sbin

How has it worked out so far?

This is the most promising bit of information we have had in weeks. I was starting to lose hope…

I’m an hour in, auto scan set to every 15 minutes, and all finder windows are closed. No trashcan icons yet, but we also don’t know what the “smb timeout” threshold is, so I want to give it at least half of today before I fully confirm. I am keeping “empty trash automatically” disabled for the time being.

I tried this yesterday. It definitely helps, but doesn’t completely solve the issue.

This did resolve all the crashes I had with Finder and writing to my NAS. However, overnight, I did not leave a Finder window open and the trash cans still appeared :frowning: Odd, because nothing else lost connection to the media.

Thankfully, it no longer requires a full restart on my Mac to reconnect the media in Plex - only a restart of PMS, reconnecting the folder to the library, and scanning.

Do you use any 3rd party app for mounting SMB? It’s weird that this workaround worked fine for you for a while, then something overnight broke it. I’m using AutoMounter which could possibly be helping keep it alive better than the built-in. I’m going to be curious to see if mine performs differently than yours overnight.

Login Items is not where you want smbd. You want it in settings → privacy & security → Full Disk Access

Yes, I use Automounter.

Specifically for Plex, this issue has always been overnight since updating to macOS 15. The only thing that occurs overnight are my Plex scheduled tasks. It might be worth stopping my scheduled tasks to see if that changes anything in the morning.

The crazy thing is that before adding smbd to full disk access, I could reproduce the issue simply by closing finder windows and waiting until auto scan ran. But now, with finder windows closed, and smbd having full disk access, I’m almost 5 hours in and nearly 20 auto scans deep, and I’m not getting the trashcan icons. So I’d like to know what the difference is between this and overnight.

Your experience today is what I experienced yesterday after granting smbd full disk access. Maybe it’s just something on my end and you and everyone else can wake up with no issues and rejoice! I await your update tomorrow.

So, there’s nothing on Plex’s code that caused this problem? Glad you guys found a better fix for the problem.

Maybe it is, but Sequoia broke Plex - not the other way around. Plex may need to change something to accommodate Sequoia but putting the vitriolic blame solely on Plex when the problem shows up the second Sequoia is installed? Come on.

Another SMB problem I’ve been experiencing with Sequoia, is while I was watching a movie on Plex, I started a large file transfer (80GB) from a locally connected SSD via USB to my NAS, and the transfer failed. I tried it 3 times. I stop playing the movie on Plex, and the file transfer completes no problem.

None of these SMB issues should come as a surprise with Apple. The entire reason the third party app Automounter exists is because MacOS has a difficult time keeping network drives mounted, regardless of protocol, and always has.

My last Hail Mary attempt before reverting to Sonoma, is to link aggregate my NAS. It doesn’t make sense that it would work, but nothing about this problem makes sense in the first place.

I went to look and smbd was already listed and enabled for full disk access for me.

Tried turning it off, restarting, enabling, restarting and plex still needs the finder window open or I get trashcans.

Add smbd to full disk access, restarted, closed finder windows, than scanned.

instant trashcans.

didn’t fix it even for a moment for me.

wild… I’m now 6 hours into this and mine still going great.

Maybe it was something else you changed.

Not sure what that could be. I’ve been pretty good about not making changes that aren’t discussed in here. So if there is an additional setting that works in conjunction with the smbd setting, then its somewhere in this thread.

I can also say that I already had smbd enabled in my Full Disk Access and still have the issue consistently if a Finder window isn’t open. To be clear, I’m not using AutoMounter and am mounting natively through a login item (essentially just ‘Go > Connect to server’).

I’ve seen wonkiness in Sequoia as well, generally network shares disconnecting periodically, and also had a media scan remove items.

I tried switching around some settings on the SMB server side (Ubuntu) but that didn’t make a difference. There’s something lightly ■■■■■■ about SMB on Sequoia, and heavy access (like Plex generates) seems to trigger it.
