Plex Server Version#: 1.41.0.8992
Running on 2018 Mac Mini 3.2 Ghz Intel i7 16GB RAM. MacOS 15.0 Sequoia
Media library on Synology RackStation RS819 DSM 1.41.0.8992 (Mounted Volume)
Possibly since updating to MacOS 15.0 (didn’t notice this issue prior), my ‘Movies’ library has started dropping / missing about half of its content (from ~2000 movies to 996). I’ve confirmed that the media content is still there, but a library scan will not detect it. If it edit the library and either add the same location or edit the existing location to the same folder, usually it will then detect all the missing entries and re-add them (and remembers that they’re already watched, etc.) but then after about a day the library will drop back down to 996 entries.
Adding a new Movies library to the same location often results in an initial scan of 996 items.
Haven’t been able to fully confirm, but it seems like most of the missing entries are .mp4 format (although, I have found at least one .mp4 movie that is successfully detected each time).
I’ve Optimized the Database and Cleaned Bundles, etc.
Any suggestions? (yes, I probably shouldn’t have jumped the gun to MacOS 15.0 so quickly).
+1, I’m facing the exact same thing too. Hopeful that the plex staff can have a look at this. Latest beta version of Plex on M1 Mac. Files are confirmed present with correct permissions etc as it has been working for years.
@OttoKerner after disabling the ‘automatically empty trash after every scan’ option, I updated the library path (to the same value) and it re-added all missing entries. Then scanned the library again, and it now marks all those previously missing titles as Unavailable (yet, I can confirm that the video files are still actually there in the original path and it detected them on the initial rescan). Very odd behaviour here.
Weird indeed. I can only assume that it is something Mac-specific, of which I have almost no knowledge.
The only thing that comes to mind is some sort of energy saving thing, which shuts down network links and peripherals after a while, but doesn’t restore operation fats enough when needed.
I’d investigate in this direction. See if there are some energy saving policies which can be tweaked in the operating system.
Good idea, but I don’t think it’s related to the mounted volume disconnecting or an energy saving thing as all the content is there but this seems very selective to about half my library. I’ll keep digging but so far it looks like most of the ‘missing’ content are .mp4 video files.
@FarishBlades are you seeing the same thing with .mp4 files in your library?
Thanks @Speidel - I can confirm the exact same behaviour now and can replicate this every time: default library scan will flag about half my library as missing, I can then go to the library settings and re-point the path to the same location and it scans and brings them back, then a default ‘scan library’ will tag the same items again as missing. Using ‘Plex Movie’ as the scanner (and agent), but doesn’t seem like changing the scanner to anything else really changes behaviour for me (changing it to ‘Plex media scanner’ doesn’t let me save, and the Plex video file options don’t seem to do anything).
Yup. Mine is happening with my TV Shows library. My Movies library is working as expected.
The only consistencies I can see at the moment is MacOS 15, Synology NAS and using AutoMounter. Not sure if you’re using all of them.
I removed AutoMounter, basically just shut it down and connected directly. Same behavior. I completely deleted AutoMounter, even all the hidden files, and same behavior. So it’s not AutoMounter.
And if I use Infuse for playback, all those items that say Unavailable, but after clicking Get Info say they’re available, they all play just fine thru Infuse on my Apple TV, but the same files will say “file is missing” via the Plex app on the Apple TV. And the Plex for Mac Desktop app plays everything.
It seems to be a bug of sorts with Plex. If it was something else, it would be happening elsewhere. If it was Apple, Infuse wouldn’t work. If it was Synology, Infuse wouldn’t work.
Rolling back to PMS 1.40.x seems to have resolved the issue for me. Might be worth a shot for others to try. Just remember to turn off automatic updates in PMS.
I am having the EXACT same issues as many of you… I thought I was losing my mind and finally decided to see if anyone here was having the same issue(s).
With me it’s ONLY my Movies section being affected. My 4k Movies, 4k TV Shows, TV Shows, Music, Documentaries folders are all fine.
Today I was so frustrated I just decided to do a completely clean install and having the same issues. Only the Movies folder is not showing approx 500 movies. All the other libraries seem to be unaffected…
I am having the issue with .mkv’s mainly though. 98% of my library was ripped with MakeMKV. I read above that others were having the issues with .mp4 files just wanted to add the .mkv files are not showing up as well.
gmfreed said rolling back to 1.40.xxxx solved the issue. Can you please tell me where/how to a previous version fo PMS?
My Setup in case any is interested:
MacStudio M1 Max w/64GB running Sequoia 15.0
Synology 1819+
PMS Version 1.41.0.8992
Regarding rolling back to prior PMS version…. In the “Plex files unavailable but they’re not missing” thread, linked below, someone posted that they tried this and thought it worked - but after a media scan they realized it was still dropping shows/movies.
I am having the same problem and also with TV shows. It always reduces to 993 or 996, I edit the libraries file locations and they all come back with the watched flag still in place. Anyone got an updates on this. This wasnt an issue prior to upgrading to macOS 15.0. I do not use Automounter, I automatically map the drives on login. I also use 2 different Synology NAS’s
