Plex Files Unavailable but they’re not missing

Interesting. I’ve never seen trash cans immediately after rebooting. In fact, that’s how I had been working around the issue (reboot, then scan). Keeping a Finder window open didn’t fix it for me every time.

I’ve been using the workaround for the past couple of days, re-scanning frequently, and I haven’t encountered the issue yet. Hoping that it at least fixes the problem for others too.

To all on this thread - have you experienced this issue on other Platforms such as Windows +Synology or Linux+Synology?

I am begginign to regreat selling my NVidia GPU Win PC earlier in the year to replace with a a MacMini more efficient setup. This morning even AFP was off but that was due to a Synology restart so not entirely Apple’s fault.

Perhaps time to go back to Windows?

Thanks all

Have you tried the nsmb.conf file that was posted in here last week? That has been working great for me using SMB. But the other option is to also keep the finder windows open to those folders. Either way, there are some workarounds that can be used until the issue is officially resolved.

No Not yet as i was away for a few days and did not fancy doing all that remotely!

Will give it a shot this week and report back but is that configuration likley to break with the next OS update from Apple?

How do i add that file - i am useless with Terminal @Anyware - is there a step by step intruction?

Make sure the file is saved to your desktop as nsmb.conf. Then click Go → Go to folder. Enter ‘/etc/’ without the quotes. Drag and drop the conf file into that folder, it will ask you for admin approval. Confirm the file saved in that folder, then reboot. Adjust your network paths to connect over SMB.

All done and seems to be working. I had multiple volumes for some reason like Video and Video-1 but that was because i was forcing the NFS shares at login - removed those and restarted and now I only have ONE Video volume which is the SMB one.

Have you re-enabled the folder scanning and Trash and do you still keep the folders open?

Thanks

I have re-enabled all automatic scanning, but I did not re-enable empty trash. We need it to not empty trash so we know when it messes up. I also no longer keep the finder windows open. However, I still have them to open at startup incase this file doesnt fix it long term.

The only thing I can say is that I do not mount my drives through the built-in macOS “connect to server” option. I exclusively use AutoMounter. I also use the AutoMounter Helper App to be able to mount them in /Volumes, which requires an AutoMounter Pro license. Maybe this is the difference?

It could be slower for some operations, since the mc_on=no setting explicitly disables multichannel support. You could also remove everything in the nsmb.conf file except for dir_cache_off=yes and mc_on=no. I still haven’t validated that those are the only two configuration changes that make a difference, but perhaps another one of the settings doesn’t work as well for you. It’s an easy thing to try.

Thanks to @gmfreed for explaining how to do this!

Very unlikely that macOS updates will affect this file. These settings have been around for many years.

Just installed automounter - seems pretty straighforward! Thanks for the suggestion!

So good news…
Since i literally wiped my whole machine last week and started over, I had since forgotten to put smbd in FULL DISK ACCESS again. Once I had done that, and added the new NSMB.conf file, things are now working relatively normal again so far.
Finder is closed, scans are completing normally.

I only now pray this continues to work, and something else doesnt break this fix as well.

THANKS SO MUCH both @gmfreed and @Anyware for ongoing guidance while we all figure this out together.

Just to add my experience with the custom nsmb.conf. Thank you to @gmfreed and @Anyware for that solution to this issue. It seems to work for me for the last 2 days or so. I no longer need to keep the finder window open and the scan works as intended. Awesome job.

Thanks for the kind words! Just to make sure everyone gets the credit they deserve, @Anyware should be thanked for the conf file, he’s the one that got it created and posted. I only assisted him in helping others get it set up.

Sorry if this is not the relevant thread. I dont use a NAS and instead only have my hard drive plugged into my mac mini directly. My Movies and TV Shows are on the external hard drive. The “workaround” in the latest replies above dont necessarily apply to a case where i dont have a Synology NAS, correct? Thanks in advance…

Sadly, the fix worked for me for about 6 hours.

Now with everything set exactly the same way, everything is back to working as borked as it was this morning before I added the .conf file and added smbd to full disk access.

They are both still on and in the same place, but I can no longer scan anything as both my movies and tv shows folders now just perpetually load, and never open, unless i remove the .conf file, than they open again, and im back to square one, sadly.

boo…
