Hi, so I’ve done some research into troubleshooting this issue as much as I can and I can’t work this out.
I use a Synology NAS Drive and for the most part, it is working fine. Most of my files are appearing on Plex, but some aren’t.
I have just uploaded 6 seasons of a TV show and the first 5 are showing up on Plex and work fine, but season 6 is not showing at all. All file names are named in the same way, so I’m really not sure why they are not being picked up.
Also, I’ve added 2 more episodes of the latest season of another show and those 2 aren’t showing up. Every other episode is appearing fine.
I’ve used FileBot to make sure that they are all using the correct naming convention, and I’ve done the “Plex dance” multiple times with no luck.
Weirdly enough, I have multiple other seasons and shows that are not using the correct naming convention, but are appearing on Plex just fine.
I haven’t gone through each TV show or movie yet (as I’ve just finished copying all of my video content) to make sure they are all there, but I am sure there are more that are also not being recognised.
Note: in the old days setting a forum link used to actually link somewhere. The New and Improved Vanilla Forums may be ‘new’, but they’re not really ‘improved’, when you consider you’ll need to copy that link URL and paste it into a browser window, but here’s the jist of it - in the interest of time:
Plexweb/Settings/Server/Help/
Click the big Orange Button that reads ‘Download Logs’.
Go to your downloads folder and drag that new zip file to a message window and drop it.

We need to know how they are currently named ( and folder structure ) in order to begin to help. scanner and agent logs will also help.
Here is a link to a post on reddit I posted a few days ago asking for help. This will answer your question, as well as show you all the steps I have taken to try and make this work, but I still haven’t gotten anywhere.
Someone on Reddit mentioned checking file permissions. I used to have this problem all the time, where new folders I added would not get all the permissions needed for Plex to properly scan the files. Make sure the permissions on the new folders match those on older folders that Plex has no trouble with. For more detail, see this page.

From what I can tell, Plex has full read access to my videos folder.
I have just tried creating a new library in Plex for my TV shows, but it’s saying there are no items in this library. Updating the library is not working. Looks like it’s not picking up anything new at all…

Without those log files it will be nearly impossible to pinpoint the issue:
Plexweb/Settings/Server/Help/
Click the big Orange Button that reads ‘Download Logs’.
Go to your downloads folder and drag that new zip file to a message window and drop it.

“500 Internal Server Error” every time I try and download it.
the plex media scanner.log should be enough and the agent logs ( in the plugin logs folders ) to see if it might have matched it to something else mistakenly.
do it right after you add something and scan. if you do not have anything new to scan, do the Plex dance on file then grab log. ( they explained that in reddit thread so assuming you know how )
That some wild scanner log contents - can’t really make heads or tails of it - but I can see your naming and structuring is so far off the beaten path if you were to say it’s not working, I’d believe you. What I see simply can’t work.
@BigWheel will get you all fixed up.
I wouldn’t know where to start so I would suggest starting over AFTER reading these:
I have a hunch some unnecessary and now catastrophic changes were made to the file system in an effort to fix Exo-Planetary Naming and Structuring - when all that was really necessary was to bring the file names/structures into compliance.
FileBot could have done that (and still can) in seconds without all the ‘wringing of hands’.
Now it may be necessary to hit ‘UnDo’ 400 times to get back where this all started.
But what do I know? I can’t make heads or tails out of that Scanner Log.
I can ‘guess’ that a 500 Internal Server error when trying to download logs is an indicator of a rather serious malfunction.
In your Synology web interface, open Control Panel and then Shared Folder. These are all the shares which are defined.
To make it so Plex can see your media, you only need edit the specific share and add user plex.
The sequence is:
Highlight the share
Click the Edit
Click the Permissions tab
Add user plex
Click OK
You should know Synology has a very bad habit of forgetting the permissions we assign to our shares for Plex.
There is nothing for you to modify in the Plex share. This is where Plex keeps the metadata it has for your media.
Because of how Synology’s “Home” service works, It’s ‘best practice’ to create a share for each media type or grouping. I have several Movie types (animated, requested, movies, movies2). Part of my grouping is to make offline backup easier. The ‘Movies’ share fits on a 6TB drive. This way, should I ever lose /volume1, I only need reload from backups (yes, time consuming but i didn’t lose anything. HyperBackup keeps the backups up to date as I add media.
To show you where the permissions are (please excuse the different applications and hosts I control in my permissions tab)
