We currently have no current plans here - but it isn’t a bad idea. We have chatted about it a little bit since you posted and already had a few edge cases called out that we would have to address to make it happen. I am going to go ahead and add this to our roadmap discussion board for further review.
Hi @tsundf ! Thanks for bringing this one up.
We dug in here a bit just now and it looks like there is a bit of logic in place that was put in to handle existing anime extras - but we never documented that this logic is in place! We are going to make another pass here and see if that logic is really worth it (and would update the documentation) or if we should remove that special case (which is what I would guess you would vote for
). Thanks for bringing this one up!
Is there any plans to improve customization and control of the homescreen for others users ?
For example show only a collection to one user ?
I’ve been using Plex for years and everything usually works very well, it’s truly an amazing service.
One thing that’s kind of been ruining the experience for me lately is since I got an HDR OLED TV. I rely heavily on subtitles and in HDR the text gets reaaaally bright. Plex has alternative colors and that’s great, it fixes the blinding white subtitles. What’s annoying though is that I watch about 50/50 SDR and HDR content and this means I constantly have to go into settings and change between white and dark grey subtitle colors.
I’m definitely not a programmer but in my mind it feels like it would be an easy thing to implement different color settings for HDR and SDR content. That would be an amazing QoL improvement for all of us who watch with subtitles. Is that something that could be implemented?
Thanks again for doing this.
It is entirely possible that I am getting something wrong here - but it is my understanding that this is dependent on the show ordering. If a holiday episode is part of a regular season list, i.e. S02E09 then it should play in-line with no issues. However, if it is there as a special episode, i.e. S00E12 then we don’t have any context or logic that would do something like “insert this media in between season 2 and season 3” or “insert this media in between S02E09 and S02E10”.
Pretty certain that as long as the special episode has an aired date (which I believe is recorded as ‘Originally available at’ within Plex) then it should auto-play at the correct point, even if it’s not part of the regular season list. Certainly that’s how it operates in my setup, perhaps @unabatedshagie is having an issue if the special doesn’t have an aired date?
Yep, I’m pretty sure about it too, and it has been like this for a while now.
Hi @rossinior !!
I am a bit late as @exuberantShadow already beat me to the message, but I would also like to point you to the response that @hsousa provided here. We feel that by providing equivalent functionality, this path will create a better experience over the long term and look forward to seeing the awesome stuff you come up with!
Yup - I did. Serves me right for trying to knock out as many answers as I can as we get closer to wrapping up this event and not validating my responses! My bad.
and
Thank you both for the correction and confirmation here! We are also talking a little bit internally on making sure all logic around this is solid and consistent (like playing next episode from the post-play screen vs the next episode that shows up for Continue Watching).
Just wanted to say thanks to all the PLEX employees who made this thread happen. The amount of amazing info and general positive feelings that I have seen here is just wonderful. Shout out to all the users who kept it civil. Best. Chat. Ever.

With the last few posts I would love to just stop here! (joking)
(serious) This is a reminder that we are closing this to new posts here in about 90 minutes! Get your thoughts in before the close if you have them!
Thanks!
That’s great! Thank you!
On the subject of extras, here’s another little annoyance: On the AppleTV, the first local trailer is not listed in the extras hub (subsequent trailers show however, if there are more than one). I belive this only occurs on the AppleTV.
You’re doing a fantastic job ![]()
Thanks for the great thread everyone.
I’ve been using the extras features a lot recently, as I’ve been ripping my DVD collection into Plex. Firstly, is there any info you could share on future internal plans for extras? New features, fixes etc.?
Personally, I have a few things that would improve my experience:
- More flexibility of categories - the existing categories are fine, but it would be great if there was the ability to categorise extras in your own way (ideally named whatever!)
- Ordering of extras - I’m often finding that my DVD’s contain extras presented in a specific order (e.g. date). Currently, I’m just having to call my files “1. extra one”, “2. extra two” etc, it would be nice if there was a way we could specify an ordering for extras that isn’t then visible in the extra name.
- Descriptions - Occasionally the extras have some description text, being able to include this would be cool
- Browsing extras - Just having one long line of extras that you have to scroll through to find what you want isn’t a great experience. Could extras perhaps just be a button that takes you to another UI?
Thanks for everything guys!
One last question before the thread closes regarding an old feature suggestion: any plans to add online or antenna radios? Or this isnt even in the horizon like the Pdf reader? Thanks!!
Live TV DVR I feel needs a total revamp as it seems it has been neglected over the past few years. Two major features that would make a huge impact on the usage of the Live TV functionality is to be able to do ‘crash’ (manual) live recordings, the ability to edit metadata which is useful for news coverage, and the ability to mass edit the DVR schedule. Maybe with something like a proper calendar schedule layout…Right now it is extremely frustrating deleting one show or movie at a time from the schedule which builds up over time. This would also be usuful in scheduling more TV shows or movies with multiple clicking on different days/times etc… below is a link to a good discussion about this in the past where I have included a couple of screenshots of what I am on about. ![]()
When the DVR Schedule get’s large, this causes extremely slow live tv playback when starting a stream. For me, it’s around 20 to 30 secs so I have set up a separate Live TV server for Live TV as it’s a very painful experience tuning to a channel. Compared to Emby, which is super fast changing channels, Plex is labourisly slow.
Other areas that could be looked at is the playback during a live TV event…fast forwarding or going back on the timeline often crashes or stalls the live tv viewing. Maybe custom caching settings could overcome this issue.
Another simple feature to help navigate long TV Guides is to switch on or off the channel number that you now see if you hover, but, having the ability to have it always show the channel number next to the TV Station Logo. Another cool feature would be able to type in or use Siri to search by channel number.
One more cool feature would be …let’s say the Plex server crashes or there is a power outage and a TV recording is in progress. Instead of the recording disappearing from the ‘grab’ folder and being deleted, you could have the option to recover and save the recording. Often a recording will fail if the tv signal becomes unstable and you will see the dreaded ’ Could Not move recorded media to destination’ and the whole recording is deleted. At least a partial recording would be cool.
A previous feature request from 2020, … To be able to ‘clip out’ a clip to export a short part of a show to HEVC or mp4 file for export.
Finally, with the ability to choose multiple EPG locations or TV guide sources, it would be cool when you could select the single EPG source out of various EPG locations. For example, Spectrum rather than the over the air channel or free to air guide. I have a cable card tuner as well as a OTA antenna. Scrolling down the long list of cable channels to get to the OTA channels takes a long scroll. Manually patching the correct channel to the correct EPG Channel is also tedious…maybe having a grid layout to select would be easier than scrolling the long list’s.
I know that’s a lot to ask for but, I love the Plex universe and I can’t wait to see how more amazing Plex will become as it already is pretty damn good!
Thank you all for your amazing developing work. You are all amazing!
PS: Global search of Plex content via the Apple TV Siri search which currently can search through all TV app providers.
It has literally never worked for me.
I was watching 24, I had to manually switch to the Redemption special between seasons 6 and 7.
They all have the correct dates as far as I can see.
This is just one example, as I have said, it never works for me.
Are there any thoughts to all for manual editing of intro detection or secondary intro markers? A lot of content has network or production cards at the front of episodes followed by a show cold open, which is then followed by the opening credits/intro proper, but plex typically only tags the network/production cards as the “intro” and does not tag the actual opening credits.
There are third party options like IntroEditorForPlex that try to meet this need, but the secondary markers are wiped anytime new content is added to a season.
Thanks!
Hahaha, you weren’t kidding about it being a lot. First - thank you @Jase for an awesome and thorough post. Next - there is no way I will be able to do justice to a response here. I am apologizing for that in advance. So I will keep it high level and say that we are going to pick apart your post with a fine-toothed comb and you need to know that improving the DVR functionality is an initiative that we definitely want to tackle in personal media. I am not sure that there are any specifics I can call out here, but we will review all of it! On a personal note - living in the country I am more than a little jealous at the amount of OTA content that it looks like you have access to being near a major metro area!
