Are there any plans to allow changing of the player’s default skip duration (the 30 second forward) as would love to change it to like 10 seconds instead of having to forward and press back, back.
Ah yes, I’d love an answer on this as well. I’ve chimed in a few times on other topics, but this is probably my only other issue with Plex that hasn’t been addressed yet.
We need a more explicit way to trigger intro/outro detection on shows. I have been watching a few episodes where the intro detection fails because the intro slightly changed part-way through a show. And more than quite a few where the outro “Skip credits” appears WAY too early despite no onscreen text (or not at all).
- An explicit way to force intro detection. In particular, I’d like to be able to manually select an episode and do detection only on those files in particular. This would be a nice - manual - way to correct episodes that all have the same intro as eachother.
- A way to add shows with a single “special” to the detection. Since specials either have no intro (anime) or an intro seemingly identical to regular episodes (pilot), I’d like to be able to have it detect the intro on specials if they match that of a separate season. Since Plex checks intros only (AFAIK) against episodes of the same season, these one-special episodes don’t get intro/outro credits.
- A way to re-trigger outro. I often fix and replace some shows, often from different sources, over long times. These new sources can possibly be of different lengths, due to changes in the source material or broadcaster. I worry that the intro/outro detection logic does not run properly, leaving incorrect markers on the new file.
- A manual process to correct or add new markers. As @dklein says, some shows often have a false intro that is marked, rather than the proper real (longer) intro later. I’d love to add in markers that I can then lock in to prevent Plex from altering later.
At the very least, please do 1. I try to select the offending files and do intro/outro detection by clicking analyze but after it “claims” to be doing such detection, the markers do not change. Having markers thrown out entirely and brand new markers created would make me happy to know that the error in markers is due to logic, not some bug where the markers remained from a previous file.
Is there some specific reason why we don’t have “Dolby Vision” and/or “Dolby Atmos” tags on self hosted media yet?
I know on web we have “4K DoVi/HDR10 (HEVC Main 10)” but it would be nice if this showed on the clients also - Android TV for me! Same for Dolby Atmos only showing as “TrueHD 7.1”
This isn’t being worked on right now, but we think markers have a ton of promise and don’t be surprised if we look to grow this feature in the future.
On this - we have a team here that works to update the tools that generate these are they are always tweaking and optimizing based on feedback. This will hopefully continue to get better for the automated marking and we are listening to the requests for manual adjustments!
Hi @scarbrtj!
First of all, thanks for all the suggestions… I’m going to try and address them all! ![]()
This is an interesting suggestion, and one that I’ll admit has crossed my mind as well.
We have a roadmap item to completely revamp the metadata editing modal, which is required before we dive into any other exploration such as your suggestion. This is no small feat, as that modal is one of the oldest pieces of code in our web app! ![]()
I can’t share a timeline on the refactor, or promise we’ll add support for editing cast members, but it’s definitely something up for discussion and consideration. ![]()
Interesting, I don’t think this is a case we usually test internally. Does it happen in any movie with seamless branching, or is there any particular one where it’s especially bad?
If you generate a sample file, does it still reproduce the issue? If so, please send it my way so we can investigate.
We have been working on this, but it takes time. As it was mentioned earlier, we unfortunately had to let some people go this year, some of which were actively working on this. As we restructure and prioritize, some projects have to be put on the back burner for a while until we get some resourcing time.
We hope to return to this soon, but no timeline at this point.
There’s a technical (and legal) blocker here. Doing this legally requires the Android device to license the decoder. Right now, we’re only able to use the hardware decoder on the NVIDIA SHIELD.
This is something on our minds for sure. In fact, we are currently investigating ways to have some subtitle burn-in being handled by hardware transcoding, whenever possible. We’re not yet sure this would be immediately possible for PGS, but as someone with thousands of movies with subtitles in this format, know that this is a problem near and dear to my heart! ![]()
We support many ways to filter and/or sort content in a library, and even allow saving those as smart collections. Is this not the functionality you’re looking for? What problem are you trying to solve?
(if you see this after the thread closes, feel free to DM me)
Plex Home is designed for, well homes
i.e. people who live physically together. We feel like 15 is a healthy limit, based on that definition.
So do I!

Hi All, first of all, big love to the team at Plex. Thank you for everything you’ve done.
I just wanted to refer to this post Conserve Intros when change directory - #7 by ChuckPa
It’s been since March since an employee commented and said it’s in the works for the future. Do you know roughly when it may come out or into beta? 2024? or you can’t say? I understand staff got let go so it may have been pushed for later. thx!
Just renamed some files to quickly add the ‘same’ episdes to my server. It plays as I would expect with Redemption auto-playing after the last episode of searson 6 and before episode 1 of season 7. Checked with the episodes both marked as unwatched and watched.
It would seem there’s some sort of error in your setup. It might be worth starting a separate thread to try and get to the bottom of it.
Hey guys, loving Plex! Have a question that I can’t seem to find an answer to:
I use an older Mac mini to run my Plex server and I’m looking to upgrade to a newer M2 Mac mini, but I can’t seem to find any information anywhere about the hardware accelerated transcoding capabilities for Macs and specifically the Apple Silicon versions. When I check the support page it states “macOS is only capable of hardware-accelerated encoding of 1 video at a time. This is a platform limitation from Apple” which, in my experience, is true for Intel-based Macs. With that said, the support article states VideoToolkit is used, which should enable multiple hardware accelerated streams at the same time at least on the Apple Silicon-based Macs. Do you know if this is accurate and if so what is the limiting factor for number of streams? I’m looking to have multiple hardware accelerated streams on the Mac mini. Thanks!
2 posts were split to a new topic: Can you assign a Plex Pass to two different servers?
What about photos?
There have been a few questions in this thread about photos. Aside from an assurance that there are “…no plans to remove photos support,” there have been no responses to questions about what will be happening with them.
It’s good to know this is possible, I’ll look into it.
Hello, I have a question about video chapter support. Is there any plans to support the addition of chapters through something like a text file in the same folder? Like subtitles where there is an associated text file. This would be very helpful for a lot of training/teaching videos, etc.
Hey @beckfield you caught me! I have been collecting an eerily similar list of posts to the ones you referenced and planned on providing a response. Might as well get to it.
The answer here is that we don’t know yet. We definitely aren’t dropping photos, but we haven’t put together a solid plan for what is next here. I would like to thank you for all of your suggestions and thoughts in this Fireside chat. What I can commit to is that once we have a direction we are open in communicating that with all of you. This should come out in the first half of next year as we are focusing on quality within the personal media group for the remainder of '23 (along with wrapping up a few in-flight projects) with any work that we are going to tackle being scheduled after that.
This applies to the following posts (and possible some others that I am missing):
“Great minds think alike…” ![]()
OK OK, one last request/suggestion before the thread closes.
When we invite people to Plex, it would be great if we, the admin, had control over what sources they saw and were pinned. It’s hard explaining Discover and Watchlist and the difference between my home movies and Plex-supplied movies. And each client is so different… how can I advise my mom with a Roku on how to pin sources when it might be so different from my Shield?
When we invite someone and pick libraries, we ought to be able to also see other sources like Tidal, Discover, etc… And, specify what is pinned for that user.
The user could always change pinning selections, but by letting the admin set it up for them, their onramp becomes so much easier.
