Plex Fireside in the Forums

I would add that it would be nice if the sync limit was increased. I have the “” playlist (not sure what the actual name is. But its basically all 3+ stars rated in library. And its at 4000+ songs, but sync only allows about 1800 songs. I use this for going off grid where I can stream.

Will TV Extras at the Season level ever be added to the Big Screen experiences (Apple/Android TV)?

Seconding this! I’ve been airplaying this content from my iOS device to tvOS device as a workaround. I’d be happy even if there was an extra “extras” button on the tvOS in the season level to pull these up.

And not wanting to derail at all but to add…
Communication really helps alleviate frustration.
So this is a huge step forward. Well done guys.

Hi again @dokuro ! While I don’t have info to share on the specific question around a 200 person cast limit right now, we have been working to improve the cast metadata for shows and have some changes in the works that should improve this. This won’t cover every case out there, for example there are some soap operas with quite a few guest appearances. However, we plan to continue to put effort into improving our cast pages and working to make our metadata the best possible for as many titles as possible!

My workaround, I have everything named correctly and when I’m actively watching a series, I move the season extras into the show folder.

While I am posting, these are not my words, having come from the famous @schuyler who is caught up in meetings at the moment:

"I agree, badly placed ad breaks are incredibly frustrating. They can really take away from the enjoyment of the movie/show. We’ve always tried to do something to optimize the ad breaks. Sometimes we get suggested ad breaks from our content partners, which is great. Sometimes we’re able to rely on things like chapter markers. But sometimes we have nothing to go by and have to rely on inspecting the video to look for good breaks.

“And the good news is that we’ve recently been working on improving our algorithm in those cases, using some new signals to not only try to find the best possible ad break but also try harder to avoid the worst breaks (mid dialog). We’re currently testing the new approach on a narrow subset of our content, and the initial results have been really promising. So we hope this should get a lot better pretty soon, and it’s something we’ll always look to improve.”

I am happy to confirm that we have no plans to remove photos support. We are always evaluating features and how they work, and we should make sure that we are either fixing or ending support for specific functions that have been problematic, but photos isn’t going anywhere.

That’s excellent news.

In one of my earlier replies, I mentioned a years-old, major problem where Plex isn’t showing maps for geotagged raw images (.dng). But Flow’s post reminded me that geotagged .jpg files are now also not showing maps, so this particular feature has deteriorated.

While we have some nice filters in place currently, I can confirm there isn’t a current filter to limit to something on a server/in a library. The good news is that this has kicked off some internal conversations today and it looks like we are going to add this to the roadmap to review and see how this might be done.

Hi @ecr80, I can’t share any specifics at the moment, but I can tell you that this is an area of active exploration at the moment. We’re aware the Tidal integration has been occasionally unreliable and are investigating ways we could improve the situation.

While I haven’t got anything specific to help you with the external display side of this request (I mean, it is Headless Plexamp after all), I imagine something nice may be possible using a browser automation tool and the web UI at [ip_of_pi}:32500. As for headless Plexamp in general, we have some great stuff up our sleeve Coming Soon™ (no but for real it’s going to be awesome).

Nothing in the works at the moment sorry, but never say never. As somebody has already linked, building an Apple Watch experience is effectively a similar workload to building a whole new app.

Thanks for using Plexamp and I’m glad you like it so much!

I’ve taken note of this request internally for further discussion.

As you may already know, @beckfield has an excellent feature request here that covers a lot of what you’re requesting.

While I can’t respond to everything, just know that we’re listening and we do want to improve these features. Unfortunately the tag management and multi-artist features are significant amounts of work and are lower in priority for us at the moment.

I promised myself that I wasn’t going to put in my own feature requests but this reminded me of what’s my own biggest issue with Plex for music so I am gonna bring up a specific idea.

The way Various Artists is handled isn’t exactly bad IMHO, but incomplete.

What I’d really like is some way to create additional Album Artist labels that can also be used for compilations, like how we use “Various Artists.”

For example, I have a lot of electronic dance music and most of it is technically in compilations. By the book, it should all be under the special Album Artist label “Various Artists.”

But, when I want to browse my compilations, I generally want to browse by the type of music. I don’t want to see a zillion dance music compilations mixed in with the oldies and classic rock compilations. I also have a lot of DJ mixes. Again, this is technically a kind of “Various Artists” release, but it does not fit well into the one label we have.

So, what I do is I set the Album Artist field to a new name of my own making, like “Club Tracks” or “DJ Mixes.” But Plex doesn’t know this is a special Album Artist that it should not try to look up. It separates the tracks, but it also causes some problems like attributing a real artist name to the fake artist name “Club Tracks.”

Since we already use some magic words in Plex like “Various Artists” I would propose something like this:

Any Album Artist name that starts with “Various Artists” will be treated as a compilation, but different names will remain separated in listings of artists.

This way we could create fake Album Artists like “Various Artists – DJ Mixes” and “Various Artists – Club Tracks” and so on. I think this would really help people with large collections.

Improved downloads in Plexamp will be coming in the future. The current limitation exists for technical reasons, so it’s not just a simple matter of bumping a number up a bit higher. It requires a significant re-think of how we’re handling downloaded media, but the good news is we’ve given that re-think a lot of thought. I haven’t got a timeframe to share, but just know that it will be coming.

Didn’t a Plex developer submit a fix to ffmpeg? Do we know if/when ffmpeg will incorporate the change?

Thanks @AeroR1 for calling out that thread.

As @dklein mentioned, we recently added manual audio sync adjustment to the app alongside the new audio engine to allow you to dial in the offset for your use case.

That said, I am aware that there are still some edge cases with audio-sync, and other related issues with the new audio engine. I have started digging into a number of Apple playback issues with the hope of getting enough debug/testing data on them so we can get them into the engineering roadmap to be resolved.

I just wanted to thank you for Plex. I came across it in 2010 and bought the lifetime pass in 2015. It was a great way to stream my content to ipads, tvs and PC’s. I prob dont use all of the features, but it just works for me.

Keep up the great work

Hi. Thanks for opening this thread.

My only input is this: I paid for Plex Pass. I am happy to continue paying on an ongoing basis. I don’t have a particular number in mind, but I understand money is needed to run a software company and I’m happy to pay to support that.

But what I use Plex for is watching films and TV shows from my own library on my own clients connected to my own server. I understand that’s not what every user uses Plex for. I understand that it’s important to buy billboards to advertise your ad-supported video on demand service to cater to that audience. I get it. I’m just saying it’s not what I use Plex for.

Every single time there’s an update designed to make Plex better at watching films and TV shows from my own library on my own clients connected to my own server, it makes me a happy customer. Every single time there’s an update designed to turn Plex into something else, it makes me an unhappy customer. It often feels like there’s more of the latter than the former. Again, I know other customers feel differently. This is how I feel.

So I have to echo the people further up in the thread saying really the best thing I think Plex could do – and again, I’m happy to pay – would be to spend some time working on basic quality of life, long-standing issues, and long-standing feature requests related to watching films and TV shows from my own library on my own clients connected to my own server. I know some other people want you to work on new, different features. I am not one of them.

The absolute worst update Plex has ever done is the weird invisible update that turned on a bizarre screaming noise when you launched the app. This change got reverted in like 12 hours after literally everyone complained. I don’t understand how something like this happens. Someone on the team thought this was a good feature. Or maybe no one on the team but someone in the company hierarchy thought this was a good feature. It seems hard to believe there are customers who want this. I get that you removed it but it’s just sort of emblematic for the “what the hell is going on at HQ?” feeling you’re hearing expressed a lot in this thread.

If I had to identify some of the major issues, I’d say autoplay frequently doesn’t mark episodes as watched, leading to 99% watched episodes cluttering up my Continue Watching; credits detection still feels incredibly janky; watch together still feels really rough (and you can only watch one episode together for some reason); downloads still feels like it barely works (no ability to pause/resume, lots of cases where for unclear reasons a download fails, no option to play partially downloaded video); transcoding is still really crummy (I don’t think anyone understands why transcoding to H265 is not a possibility ten years later); there are still a bunch of issues with subtitles (especially non-SRT subtitles and embedded closed caption feeds in the video stream); the experience of moving back from movie items to collections is really rough; sorting and filtering isn’t really as flexible as it should be in libraries or collections… I guess I’d say those are the primary issues, but my point is that these issues kind of touch basic use of almost every part of the core experience.

Anyway, again, I want to give you more money. I want to pay money so that the thing I pay money for is good to use.
