What about alternative orders from TMDB?

Hi @jfreiman !! Super excited to answer this one as we have been putting some serious effort into search and it is super fun to drop a bit of a spoiler alert here but you will see those changes start to roll out this week!!! Keep an eye out for a forum post when the update drops!

Well blow me down with a feather… we’ve only been asking for this kind of interaction with the devs for more than a decade. What a welcome change!

My only real issues with Plex are related to the Apple TV4K client - the well known 3 year+ audio sync thread for tvOS and the fact that DV is using fake DV. Also there is no Dolby Atmos support - we’ve been told various things with regards to the latter. It’s a licensing issue. It’s not a licensing issue. It’s this, it’s that…

Hopefully you’ll be able to fix the sync issue without having to resort to a manual audio delay, because for me the sync fluctuates and is better/worse depending on audio codec being used.

Fix those 3 issues and I can uninstall Infuse…

Great to see this kind of interaction here. Hopefully this will become a more regular event.

I see a lot of ā€œspecificā€ questions already (long-standing bugs, feature requests, etc.), so mine is more general: what is the current ā€œstateā€ of Plex? We have all heard about the lay-offs earlier this year and seen the news articles stating that Plex will be ā€œreprioritizing product road mapsā€.

I don’t expect any juicy inside info, but I was wondering what the status is? Have there been any major shifts in your priorities in the past year? Is the ad-supported free content still a major part of your strategy, or are you (re)focussing more on the personal media stuff again? The article in the Verge earlier this year talked about ā€œfour main product areasā€, without specifying them, so I’m curious if you can shed any light on this.

Anyway, thanks for making such a great product!

We plan to eventually support alternative episode orders from both TVDB and TMDB but we’re going to start with TVDB. Once all the changes required to support a dynamic list of episode orders are implemented we’ll decide if TMDB episode groups will get included in the same release or scheduled for a later date.

Seeing you once again skip over the feature requested a decade ago with no comment isn’t inspiring much confidence.

Please just tell us what’s up with this; Playback Speed

Adding my experience to @thartmann, I’ve had issues with Live TV where:

  1. If you add extra time to a recording then there is no way to start watching while the recording is in ā€œextra timeā€.

  2. If I’m watching something that is recording and I catch up with real time, then I’ve experienced issues. I’m doing this on a Roku, and it’s been a long time since I’ve tried to do this because I know it is a problem. I think I remember it either stopping playback or even jumping back to the beginning of the recording.

Thank you for holding this forum and listening to our thoughts!

I’ve had the same issues. Plex DVR is only good when a recording has completed.

It would be nice if the DVR can record to a recording folder and not use the temporary .grab folder. Then maybe they can work on playing a recording in progress and allow us to stop/resume where we left off while it’s still recording.

I have used Channels DVR which works great as a DVR. Would be nice if Plex can get their DVR to work similarly.

Thank you for your reply Simon

If you or another Plex Employe here could have a look, here are some features that may be taken into consideration in order to make Playlists use much more interesting :

Within a playlist:

  • Filter by Track Name
  • Filter by Recently added

Search Playlists

  • Allow Search inside the Playlists Page and Shared Playlists
Because : when using the Search page, Playlists often are at the bottom of the search page.
That means, closing the keyborad > swiping to the bottom of the page > then it only shows the 3 firsts results so > another clic to develop the list
  • Allow Managed Users and Users to find the Shared Playlists in their Search Page
Or, as my point two was, allow Search inside the Shared Playlists
  • Add Tags to Playlists
Having the possibility to add tags to a playlist would be a very good way to discover and rediscover playlists. As an exemple, playlists like Energy Rock, Guilty Pleasure, Flashback or Dance Hits could be all tagged with Party or Good Time.
For now they only appears if we are using a word from their titles that is very limitating the possibilty to see them.

Grant Access to Playlists:

  • Allow us to select more than one playlist at once to Grant Access to one managed users.
This is a very tedious work to do share a number of playlists, having to go back, choose it and choose the managed user again and again.
If not possible on Plexamp, maybe allow us to do it from the server side?

Smart Filter to mix Playlists:

  • Allow a playlist to be added / combine to another playlist
Because : there is plenty of ways to make playlists like Energy Rock, Energy Latin, Energy Pop etc… that could be combine in one All Energy playlist. Same for Workout Metal, Workout Hip Hop etc…

Shared Playlists:

  • add Grid View
  • Allow us to choose how to sort those playlists, at least by alphabetical order. For now you can only see them on list view and the order is define by when the playlists was shared, that is really messy

I was waiting to see if someone would ask about the dash app and as they have not, here it goes

Any future plans even in the distant future for this app or is this app just in maintenance mode with no new features and only fixes if something breaks ?

So… Speed Controls. We hear you and we are jumping in here! It is definitely on our roadmap now. This is one that we are looking to jump on and we understand the comments (and frustration) here. I have provided more context in one of the main feature request threads here so please check that out and we appreciate the feedback and are working to do better on items like this.

Happily this future is much closer than distant… a new version of Dash is nearly ready

We’ve been working a fair bit on modernizing it, and it’s in beta internally. There are still a couple known bugs to work out yet, but a release will be coming soon.

No we don’t have any plans here. The omission of user info in the feed was done purposefully because once this is generated we don’t have any control of how it might be used or distributed and we didn’t want user identifiable information in that feed for these reasons.

Oh thanks for the reminder. I would love the dash app to be more useful for admin things. Being able to edit more than just the pics would be amazing. Like being able to do video conversions, emptying the trash, etc.

I also like stats and having more/better stats within dash would be great. I cant think of anything else off the top, but maybe someone else can be stirred by this and have other things I have thought about but cant at the moment.

Fantastic - thanks

Good question, it’s obviously no secret that we had to let some (great) people go a few months ago. As someone who’s worked in this industry for a while and knows people at a lot of different companies, I’m not sure I know anyone whose company hasn’t been navigating something similar this year. After a period of (wild?) growth, it’s been a challenging period for the industry. But with that obvious caveat, the state of Plex is great. :]

There hasn’t been a shift in priorities, just a focusing. Personal media and free ad-supported content are both still major parts of our strategy. That reference to ā€œfour areasā€ had to do with how we structure our teams internally.

  1. Personal media
  2. Streaming content, like ad-supported movies & shows and live TV channels
  3. What I’ll broadly call Discover, which is all about everything apart from the actual media consumption, like trending trailers, more ways to watch things, your watchlist, etc.
  4. Platform, a lot of the internal things that the other teams build on top of

That last one isn’t something I’d call a ā€œproduct areaā€, but it’s important to how we work. The first three are all major parts of our strategy and will continue to release new features we’re excited about.

That was a helpful and candid reply @McWanke, awesome. And it’s really great to see some new employee tags around.

I was thinking… If you guys maintain more open communication with us on these topics, we’re inevitably going to see some new community management problems arise.

Like, if you say you are working on Feature X, but then you have to change course and delay it, or even cancel it… Some users are going to be more upset then than if you never mentioned Feature X at all. For other users, the existence of Feature X will be a personal attack because their Feature Z is clearly more important and OMG how can you build X first?? MY WHOLE FAMILY NEEDS Z!! Plex sucks I’m installing Embyfin!!1

With Plex making a new commitment to communication, we’ll end up trading one set of community management problems for another set… But freer communications will be a massive improvement overall.

On Plex HTPC

First of all thanks for bringing such a great app to us! Especially big thank you to @gbooker02! You always have been very kind and committed to the things we posted about the app - kudos to you!

Plex HTPC is the app I use the most and is now a crucial part of my home entertainment system.

There are however some things that I don“t like about the app:

  • This has been already written here - UI consistency - for me, this is especially a ā€œproblemā€ with Plex HTPC. It seems way ā€œbehindā€ the other clients, like the Nvidia shield. Some minor things bug me every time I use the Shield and then Plex HTPC. It starts with the audio track naming… Nvidia Shield => Full name of the Codec => ā€œDTS-HD MAā€ - on Plex HTPC it only shows as ā€œDTS-HDā€ and continues with things like ā€œUI smoothnessā€. On the shield or any other client, scrolling is buttery smooth but on Plex HTPC on Windows, it’s lagging. (It used to be smooth in earlier versions). I already posted this in the Desktop Player subforum but this wasnĀ“t really addressed, unfortunately.
(It also seems it’s not part of gbooker02Ā“s work and more on the design/web-client team to make it smooth again and update the UI - so please fix it! DonĀ“t let Plex HTPC fall behind!!..)

  • Another part on the UI - directors and writers
I know there are many rumors here in the forum that there is something planned about how they are displayed… Right now, however, you have to click on the ā€œWhat’s the movie aboutā€ text to see who has directed that movie… Please add them back to the general movie screen or let us know what is planned…

  • Codec support
That’s also something I do not fully understand… Why is there an ā€œartificialā€ codec lock for Plex HTPC? On lower-end devices, like random Android TV boxes I understand why, but on a PC? Some codecs that every PC can decode flawlessly are forced to transcode… Whereas with the Plex for Desktop App, they work fine… Examples are ProRes Video… Please allow ā€œallā€ codecs to try to direct play on Plex HTPC, if they fail to direct play, you can still transcode them… On PlexMediaPlayer I could throw any codec I want at it and it would have played it just fine…

  • And another one…
Please never get rid of desktop HTPC players!

Anyway, please keep up the great work on creating such amazing software so we can manage our own media!

Thanks, Alex

from your link…

Note: Certain clients do not yet fully support TV extras but keep an eye out on our forum as our support pages will be updated once official support is available. Currently, the only clients that fully support extras at all levels are the mobile iOS and Android apps. Other apps like the Web client, Android TV, Apple TV and Roku have limited support while the modern TV interface for Smart TVs does not yet have support for any local TV extras.

As many have already stated, Fireside is a pretty good thing here and the community is loving it. I could imagine this being ā€œheldā€ quarterly or so. And from the statistics it seems like roughly every third post is responded too, which is - okay-ish?

A few quick questions/matters of my own concerning the handling of bugs:

  1. What emphasis do you put on bugfixes as supposed to new features? I know this is a rather strange question but I don’t know how to put it differently…
I can see why bugfixes are not very popular for almost all the devs (including me, debugging C…) as new features are usually more fun and rewarding, and too much bugfixing means less new and exciting features. So I’d be curious what your balance is here.

  2. Sometimes I report a bug or two and more often than not I don’t know anything about it’s progess, if they are aware, or they’re resolving it or if they’ve even read it. And since the community can’t really say or do something about the bugs, the reply section stays empty and the post is slowly nearing it’s expiry date. And as an OP (in general), this can feel very disappointing since many put in considerable efforts to make it reproducable and by describing every step in detail, adding a series of photos or even a video, to then appearently just be ā€˜ignored’. Are there plans to improve bug reporting to make things more transparent?

  3. That’s it actually. Just those two things. Have a great rest of your day!
