Plex Fireside in the Forums

Yes, that’s the issue. The lack of support across all clients. Specifically (for me) it’s season level on big screens (Apple/Android TV), as I imagine most DVD/BR discs have extras organized by season.

I’m probably in the minority here, but I’m going to ask… What about .nfo support? Would love to see that happen. I enjoy tagging all my movies and tv series my own way. I’m old school and like naming movies that makes sense to me, not what imdb, tmdb, tvdb or Plex wants it to be named. I know this can be done after the fact, but I much prefer using TMM for all the metadata, poster and fanart. And having the files in the same folder as my media makes for backing up and restoring everything much easier. Thanks!

I care @keithmcintyre432 !!

First - we currently have no ongoing work around the FireTV functions for Voice Skills and VoiceView. Basically the underlying way the app is built has prevented these features from being usable and the effort needed to rework things would be large enough that it has pushed this down far enough in prioritization discussions that the honest answer here is that it isn’t going to happen anytime soon.

We do have an accessibility statement but this is an area that we can improve upon. One of the best ways for items like this to keep moving forward is to have employee support here at Plex and it is great to mention that we have advocates and owners for this topic and functionality. From someone that is both deaf in one ear making conversations in noisy places problematic and someone who is also colorblind, I consider myself one of those advocates. We have some further investigation planned in this area and the intent is to get the ball rolling on improvements here!

I wouldn’t hold my breath here… The easy answer (in my opinion) is that this will need future iterations (or lower spec versions) that make this much more accessible in terms of price and/or such widespread adoption that it makes sense to put some effort in here. We do keep a close eye on hardware and I admit this has promise, but I don’t see us pushing the boundaries on being a cutting edge adopter with this device. Hopefully this isn’t too big of a surprise or heartbreak :slightly_smiling_face:

My questions are:

What are the current “top priorities” at Plex?

It sounds like the overhaul of personnel has caused significant re-focusing by the team. Also, with talk of this being due to the loss of advertising revenue, does this mean Discover and ad-based streaming is receiving a different focus priority now?

Hey @Voidths!

While we don’t have a timeline for this yet, supporting local file metadata (likely with .nfo files) is definitely on our roadmap.

Hey @hokierulz & @thartmann! While Kevin already answered a similar question earlier (link), I’ll reiterate his sentiment: it’s a valid use case, and it makes sense that if you’re recording something and want to start watching it while it happens, you should be able to.

No promises or timeline, but I’ve added it to our roadmap for investigation. :slightly_smiling_face:

Let’s tackle this idea! Keep reading…

To be fair, we have always read and listened, we just declined and did a cruddy job in responding to issues and engaging with you, the users. This is a good opportunity to call out to all Plex support personnel (with a special callout to @BigWheel and @chrisc ) who have kept on even when others of us have not been there to help by jumping in with engineering/product/whatever plans, feedback, and support. They aren’t the ones you should be frustrated with and they always advocate for you within Plex!

I have had that thought and somewhat dismissed it. I say “somewhat dismissed” because while this has been positive enough to warrant doing it again, I would prefer to affect change and get so much better in our engagement that we just really don’t need it! This would be the ultimate goal here while also conceding that we have a long road to go to get there (which will probably include more events like these  ).

That is right - and this event isn’t a one-and-done for us. We do need to carry this forward and there are bigger plans here and those include the recognition that solving one problem can lead to others. If we do this successfully, we should be able to head some of those problems off before they grow too big!

For a while? It wasn’t great. What you don’t have visibility into is that we have had some big internal efforts underway in 2023 to turn this around. We have made a big push to clean up older backlogs, put more dedicated and also indirect effort against bugs and calling out quality initiatives, and in general recognize that we need to slow down a bit and look backwards a bit instead of always facing and pushing forwards. This is trending in the right direction as we can see metrics around crash rates and other issues starting to trend down and I am confident that we will both continue our focus here as well as keep making the overall stability and general use of the platform better.

Yes, but we are at step 1. We have a ways to go. Let me try and explain and wrap up this post here .

With all of  these comments in mind, I will share a few of the ideas that we are already talking about:

  • Engagement in the forums is critical to success. We start with a Fireside chat, next we get engaged in feature request threads that go back as much as 10 years! Then we build off of that and make this type of interaction a daily habit
  • Next, we review and re-evaluate our link between you, the user and the issues that are present and impact your daily use of the platform. We need to make sure that things don’t disappear into black holes. We need to link support threads together and be more transparent about what bugs we are addressing, what we plan to address, and what we aren’t going to address. This includes making sure that feedback is provided as we do make changes and fix things
  • Now we get to feature requests. This is always a challenge to draw a clear line between these items, actual bugs and things not working as intended, and support requests where things could work if you stand on your left foot and the sun and Venus are in alignment (or, more likely, if the configuration is corrected). In order to get better here we should get more transparent on what we are working on and this includes being more public with parts of our roadmap

I need to reiterate here that we are at step 1. We have a long ways to go. But all of this is what we should be doing in order to live up to the amazing and wonderful community of people that use this awesome thing called Plex. So thank you for everything as we wouldn’t be here without you and, please, keep us accountable as we have some work to do!

It’s good to hear that it isn’t totally off the table. Thank you. I appreciate it!

What’s the policy/take on 3rd party apps like Infuse who seem to make money off using the “api” that really isn’t an API? Their new beta apps seems to just be a reskin UI using direct URL calls that plex would use. How are they contributing back the improvements they have made to get better dolby vision and atmos support?

Thank you! I appreciate the response. Great communication. :slightly_smiling_face:

Hiya @Tangs thanks for your post here!

We are definitely taking a look at all posts here in this thread and are working hard to get eyeballs and responses to other threads. For big feature suggestion posts, I can promise that they will be reviewed and considered, but for hopefully obvious reasons I can’t commit to anything beyond the review right now as we are getting quite a few awesome ideas coming our way in this Fireside chat. Just wanted to let you know that you ideas are seen and will be considered as we move forward!

Me too!!

Yes please!!

The quick answer here is that while we aren’t adding this stuff to the Dash app right now, it is getting some love (see this post). It has also already been a part of some future-looking discussions, we just have to make some decisions and get it onto the roadmap.

I would love the dash app to be more useful for admin things.

Incidentally, the next release will include some new bits of admin functionality
But yes, as @McWanke says, future plans for the next major version are still in discussion.

 that is on me - should have gone looking for some release notes before posting! Thanks for keeping me honest here @ohai-bri !!

Hehe all good! We managed to sneak a few things in last minute!

Whats being done to monetize/combat the plex share selling. Why not just lower the amount of friends a person can have, is there really a reason for 100? Free should be < 3, maybe 10 for Plex Pass and then anything else you should charge for.

Hi @Havohej I want to first start by saying we hear you (and others like @Xhaka) loud and clear about the audio issues on the Apple TV - and probably didn’t respond as clear as we needed to in our first attempt. While we are committed to righting this ship and improving quality - we are still learning as we go.

For this issue, it IS on the roadmap, isn’t currently being worked on, but when we next review that roadmap I can promise you that from these conversations we need to push it up in priority (and I will be leading that push).

This is confusing. So there is change without change?

Every time a company downsizes it has to change. Plex had to resize due to lack revenue. So, what is Plex changing to make its investors happy (they don’t like to lose money)? How are those changes going to impact us, the content admins?

I’m happy to see this openness in communication. What I’m hoping is to see communication that truly answers our concerns: Is Plex going to be sticking around? How? How is Plex planning on increasing revenues?

I think many here would agree, we are concerned that the lost of revenue and staff means a lack of resources to be applied to the product. So far, this thread seems to be saying everything is still the same and all priorities are being addressed and it will even be better. That sounds like a lot of wishful thinking that we can’t hang our hats on. I think users here would appreciate knowing realistic expectations.

I will add, what is a bit frustrating is that Plex applied a lot of resources in the past to its ad-based streaming, and that FOCUS got Plex into the situation it finds itself today. Many users here never thought that was a good product space for Plex. We are hoping to hear Plex has learned from this situation and what those lessons are and how they will impact us going forward.

Thanks.

Sorry a little late to the thread. I scanned it and if I missed this suggestion for a playlist idea, then just add my vote to it.

I would find a TV-style programming playlist for Plex powerfully useful. I have gotten several families into using Plex and running a server for it (each paid for their own, we found Plex to be such a great value all wanted to support the product). What we need is a way to program TV and movie content like a TV station, specifically for kids. Many private or homeschool and having a way to make a TV channel that can be programmed for content in the server would be amazing!

Basically a way to randomly pull from a series or movie folder when creating a window of time, say like 4-8 hours a day.

Hope this makes sense. Thanks!
