Can you guys change the order of operations on Library Scans when the “Empty trash automatically after every scan” option is active? Right now it seems to run the scan and empty the trash before matching newly found media. So if I am upgrading a program’s file to a newer version PMS thinks the new file is new media being added and resets the “Added On” date in the metadata. If I’m replacing an existing program’s file I don’t want this reset and the program to appear on the hub as a newly-added movie/show.
At this time I have to leave the Auto Empty Trash option off, run the scan, and then manually empty the trash on Library afterwards to remove the duplicate (old file that I replaced). If we can just move the Empty Trash task to the very end of the operation (after the new media scan/matching) that would solve that.
Mutual agreement. I’m totally skeptical right now. I’m not asking for employees to get sick from overworking and be exhausted from their jobs and potentially cause human misery. I’m simply wondering does Plex know what they need to do so we don’t wind up in this same predicament in another five to ten years?
While I agree that something should be done to combat selling Plex access, I think having server admins pay to unlock sharing tiers might have the opposite effect to what you intend. If I want to share with more people than I get at the free tier, that could increase the chance that I ask those people to help cover the cost of the feature that gives them access.
A low free sharing threshold might also induce people to share accounts. “Hey guys, just sign in with allmyplexfriends@gmail.com and password123 …” That’s terrible for security and could impact customer support.
Just wanted to take a moment to comment on this. The way it is written sounds like there is some higher power behind the scenes directing all of this. That isn’t the way we operate here at Plex! The entire idea for this Fireside chat came from the same employees you see jumping in and responding to the great comments and feedback being posted here. We have a great culture that supports initiatives like this and we work hard to keep it that way.
thanks for supporting us! Glad you are enjoying what we have built!
In regards to your post, we are trying really hard to respond to as many comments, suggestions and questions as possible. I would like to thank you for the well reasons and thought out ideas listed here. We have covered many of them already, and I wanted to let you know that we do hear you and will work hard to add additional data points to existing work and roadmap items and also add the other items into our discussion queue!
Not really. You can easily limit it to concurrent streams, ip. Home users already get you around multiple people in a house hold streaming multiple things. The overall increase in funds would further development and it’s not like the sharing isn’t happening now. Or they will move to emby which already does this or Jellyfin. So while you may think people would be sharing username and passwords they wouldn’t be if they are selling shares since any rando user could change the password and now what all those other people that paid for access will be screaming. No one cares about the 2-3 friend you have and don’t want to pay for plex pass this price could also come down. This is for the large scale shares that operate multiple servers and have hundreds of users and only pay a singe plex pass license then sell access for 10$+ a month. Then the users come here and complain and ask questions, there have been numerous post where people say oh I bought access from xyz service I found.
Couldn’t agree more and the latter part was really annoying. Have an issue, submit a post with logs and then three months later wonder if anyone from Plex even noticed the post.
We, in most cases have a better idea now. So again bravo to all the staff who are chiming in on different topics.
Again (seeing as you tagged me in) the lip sync issue is just a minor annoyance for me personally now (at least we have the offset option)
Lack of Spatial Multi-Channel is similar (at least I can use Spatial Stereo.)
Obviously again for me personally the video stutter is more serious but then even that pales into insignificance compared to the audio dropouts within two minutes of starting playback when using HomePods.
(I sent those logs by the way and please feel free to let me know if you need more.)
However I’m wise enough to know that HomePods usage will be a minority compared to those using AVR/Soundbars and what’s most important to be fixed for me will be different for someone else. So for now I will probably reconnect my soundbar as it’s easier to switch audio outputs than constantly switch between the new and old audio engine.
They should use the git tracking system or jira or something similar to where you can track issue progress. As opposed to forum posts that auto close after 3 months. Some bugs take years to get to.
This is a super-important topic and one I’m personally invested in. First off, I have some bad news for you: I’m afraid we can’t really give any juicy details about what exactly we’re doing or how we investigate these types of accounts & services. That type of stuff is almost like “trade secrets” and we don’t want to tip our hats to any of those nefarious folks who might be lurking and reading.
What I can say is that this is a super important topic and area of interest to us. These people and services are breaking our Terms of Service and having a negative impact not only on Plex itself, but on legitimate users of Plex and even our partners. We’re putting a lot of effort into this area behind the scenes and we’ve had a lot of success so far. We also routinely discuss different ideas—including some mentioned here—for tweaks that we might make in the product or feature set, new tools we might use on our back end, and more.
Most of the action here all happens in the shadows and it isn’t very visible to regular, legitimate users. And if we’re doing things right, it shouldn’t be visible or impact regular users. But you’re absolutely correct that this is an important area and one we’ll continue to focus efforts on.
My questions (and a few requests) revolve around Plexamp. Firstly I’d like to say that Plexamp changed the way I interact with my music collection, I’ve refound artists and bands I’d long forgotten about and when I look at my server stats, music, and my toddlers tv, are far and above any other media. You should be incredibly proud of that application, thank you!
So for the questions:
Is Plexamp going to move out of labs and become a “full” Plex product?
Are you looking at other ways of monetising the music element of Plex and Plexamp, with integration with other streaming services, I’d even pay an app fee for a “desktop mode.”
Are you looking at more deeper library management? For example if I Play a track from an album, and I have two versions of that album, standard and deluxe, then both appear in the stats. Being able to group releases would be excellent.
I’d love to see more artist cross connections, for example the metadata for artists and albums contains numerous references to other artists, bands and albums. It would be great to see those hyperlinked so we can jump between objects.
And as a last request, using Plexamp has, and this isn’t a bad thing, forced me to go and invest more time and money in my collections, however finding new material can be tedious. I know Tidal integration helps here, but having a section for similar artists that are not in my library would be great.
Those of us in the forum who offer our assistance have come across posts with individuals who seek guidance about how to access media when they don’t see any in their portals. I would agree that this is very much a concern for some of us because while I don’t like to accuse these users, not all of them understand what they got themselves into, the perps who make using Plex a commercial enterprise for themselves ruin and taint the use case for the Plex ecosystem. I am curious though, might there be a bot of some kind, or maybe a @ user we can report these situations for quicker response or for an internal investigation?
My family and I use Plex everyday and love it. We use it for server based movies/TV shows and watching/recording live TV.
We use Plex exclusively on the LG and Samsung smart TV platforms (4 TVs in the household). There is a long running complaint in the forums about the increasingly poor performance of the Plex apps on these TV platforms. I wouldn’t say the apps are unusable but navigation through the UI is slow and laggy and has got worse with each new release on these two platforms. We have had hints from Plex employees that these issues are being looked at but it has been almost two years now since these issues were reported and nothing has improved. Is it Plex’s intention to address these issues on the LG and Samsung platforms? We would all appreciate a meaningful update. Thank you.
The new landing page for some actors in Plex is nice, the links/usernames is a nice touch, but a little inconvenient for the TV - could you add a QR code?
Implement VoiceView Accessibility Features (Fire TV)
Consider the Amazon Fire TV launcher screen used to navigate a movie catalogue.
The text at the top of the screen updates to show the title, description, rating, and other information about the item currently in focus.
Because this non-focusable content updates each time the user selects a movie,
the node containing the selected movie should be described with the describedBy extra.
This will cause this information to be spoken automatically after a brief pause on the item.
Code Sample:
// You can set extras on a button which is described by some
// static text elsewhere on the screen as follows.
Button button = (Button) findViewById(R.id.button);
button.setAccessibilityDelegate(new View.AccessibilityDelegate() {
public void onInitializeAccessibilityNodeInfo(View host, AccessibilityNodeInfo info) {
super.onInitializeAccessibilityNodeInfo(host, info);
info.getExtras().putString(“com.amazon.accessibility.describedBy”, R.id.movie_title_1 + " " + R.id.actors_1 + " " + R.id.description_1);
info.setEnabled(host.isEnabled());
}
});
That took me 10 minutes to find.
You should hire me…
Please reconsider prioritizing Accessibility support to your FireTV app.
Will arrow key scrolling in the web app be added at some point? While I understand this functionality may or may not be present in the HTPC app (I don’t use it), I feel like this is a must-add to the web app, as that is where the server management side of things happens.
It can be, well, kind of painful in all honesty to use the sidebar when trying to navigate a large library, as the precision required to get exactly where you need to go isn’t always achievable.
And if I have your attention for a moment, I would love to send some praise your way. Thank you so much to the Plex team for such a tremendous product! Plex and Plexamp have redefined the way I interact with my personal media libraries and it has been an absolute godsend over the years. Much love and respect!
Totally get it - but from my observations it just hasn’t been talked about that much in a space that I am a part of internally. There may be conversations happening that I don’t have visibility to, but I am kinda doubting that. So any thoughts I would post here are my own. Not sure anyone wants to hear a re-hash of what has been extensively discussed and written about already
First - adding QR codes is tough. Some platforms have limitations there and at this time we probably won’t do much there. With that being said, we are always working to make the interface and experience better so if you have any specific feedback around what feels inconvenient here I would be glad to pass that along to our product and UX teams for review! I will say that navigation and input on the tv clients in general is a challenge to design around as the input remotes don’t give a lot of options
Yes, we can do better than auto-closed forum threads and 10+ year old feature request threads. I laid out a high level that talks about some of that here.
