Plex for Apple TV app (player) 8.8
Plex for Apple TV app (player) 8.8 is buggy, even with Auto Adjust Quality [OFF]. Aside from momentary testing referenced far below, Auto Adjust Quality is always set to [OFF].
Plex for Apple TV app (player) 8.8 froze the display of a show being watched when a recorded commenced on the same channel, apparently forcing an Apple TV hardware restart.
Plex for Apple TV app (player) 8.8 fails to play from the beginning OTA live TV shows being recorded.
Plex for Apple TV app (player) 8.8 is still buggy if Auto Adjust Quality is [ON].
My wife was watching the Emmy’s live 5pm – 8pm PT OTA broadcast on display channel 5.1, a local NBC affiliate. She missed the beginning ~15 minutes, so she asked me to schedule recording of the rerun scheduled immediately following on the same channel 5.1 at 8pm PT. I carefully adjusted the default DVR setting to disable Allow partial airings and selected the 8pm airing from the drop-down menu. I reconfirmed that Plex scheduled the recording from 8pm to 11pm on channel 5.1.
Not surprisingly, the channel 5.1 5pm - 8pm OTA live broadcast ran slightly longer than its scheduled 3 hours. At 8 pm, Plex for Apple TV 8.8 froze while my wife was watching, causing her to miss the last ~7 minutes (ie, from 8:00pm – 8:07pm). So, even though the tuner stayed tuned to the same channel 5.1, Plex would not let her continue watch.
Knowing that I had scheduled Plex to start recording channel 5.1 at 8pm, my wife attempted to watch that OTA live TV show being recorded. Plex for Apple TV 8.8 hung with a spinning pinwheel. (She exited the Plex for Apple TV 8.8 app, changing to a different Apple TV app, one that only streams without any use of our HDHomeRun tuner, then . . . )
. . . yelled to (or at) me that “Plex was FUBAR again.” I launched the Plex for Apple TV app, and attempted to watch the 8pm Emmy’s being recorded, experiencing the same Plex for Apple TV app UI bug—Plex for Apple TV hung displaying a spinning pinwheel.
I was forced to restart the Apple TV hardware to get the Plex for Apple TV app to attempt playing the OTA live TV show being recorded. As we experienced before version 8.6 broke everything for us, Plex for Apple TV prompted me to watch [from the beginning] or [live]. I chose [from the beginning], then called my wife thinking I had worked around the Plex bug(s). Unfortunately, Plex left me with egg on my face yet another time. Watching the OTA live TV showing “from the beginning” did not, watch from the beginning. It appeared to be ~live (ie, very much not from the beginning).
So, her disgust for Plex amplified (remember, she lost a month of live TV and DVR access due to Plex for Apple TV 8.6 being FUBAR, without any use to us whatsoever), she gave up.
I tested Plex for Mac 1.53.1.3225 in my office. Plex for Mac was able to watch the OTA live TV broadcast being recorded from the beginning.
.
IF Auto Adjust Quality [ON], playing previously recorded OTA live TV shows is still problematic with Plex for Apple TV app (player) 8.8, and has been since Plex for Apple TV app (player) 8.6 was released in July. As with 8.6 and 8.7, audio may be completely absent if an as-yet-unplayed recording is played, or a partially played recording is rewinded to the beginning, then played.
(Playing of OTA live TV shows that are not being recorded seems to be now functional when Auto Adjust Quality [ON] with Plex for Apple TV app (player) 8.8—thank you, Plex.
I did not have time to test playing of OTA live TV shows that were being recorded when Auto Adjust Quality [ON] with Plex for Apple TV app (player) 8.8.
