Plex for Apple TV 8.24 Severe Bug (since 8.6?) Requires Disabling "Auto Adjust Quality"

Plex for Apple TV app 8.24
Apple TV 4K 64GB (2nd generation)
tvOS 15.6

PMS for Mac 1.32.4.7195

(28 Aug 2023) 13 months after reporting, the severe Plex for Apple TV app version 8.6 bug rendering Plex useless for watching all OTA current TV content (ie, HD), is still evident in version 8.24, despite Plex release notes claiming it was fixed in 8.8—WTF?

20 July 2022, Plex released the Plex for Apple TV app version 8.6 that, similarly, rendered all of Plex software, including PMS, effectively absolutely useless for my family for 33 days until a user discovered and posted a workaround. (We only use Plex to watch and record OTA Live TV.)

Plex Useless; Apple TV 8.6 & 8.7 Player FUBAR—Can’t Play TV; iOS Player 8.5 Can’t Play Shows Being Recorded

Version 8.8 is now available.

Auto Adjust Quality” still breaks watching current TV (ie, HD)—I just tested 8.24.

It could be that there was a Plex for Apple TV app version between 8.6 and 8.24 released in which “Auto Adjust Quality” did not break Plex. Until today, though, I had not re-tested, since Plex never responded to my topic with any remedy, nor even a we’ve-reproduced-the-bug acknowledgement. Until recently, I was not aware of the Plex for Apple TV release notes page, and only today (28 Aug 2023) read of the claimed version 8.8 bug fix.

If the 20 July 2022 Plex for Apple TV app 8.6 severe bug rendering Plex for Apple TV useless was ever temporarily fixed, it is definitely not fixed now.

Hi. Can you show the detailed view from the Plex dashboard while playing a broadcast? Example:

Auto Adjust Quality should only affect remote streams.

I recently found apple tv clients failing to play some 4k movies I have hosted. Not all 4k, but some of them in DoVi or DV format mostly.

The only solution was to have them disable this feature, then that media plays just fine.

My server Side options are turned off for this feature, so not sure why it would make a difference, but apparently it does.

Now my instructions to apple tv users includes turning off this option, as well as setting remote streaming quality to maximum.

Bad move Plex devs. A default option shouldn’t break your apple tv media watching experience out of the box.

Btw this affects all versions of apple tv (gen1-3) and all current versions of the app.

I’m not an expert and I dont know your setup but it might not necessarily be a Plex issue.

A lot of TV’s don’t support Dolby Vision (it’s a licensing issue). I’m not saying this is you; but some people think they’re watching DV movies but it’s actually HDR/HDR10 fallback. The more modern and pricier model TV’s do support DV (except Samsung) but my understanding otherwise is it’s more relevant to the model of the TV than the brand, as it’s going to be a more expensive model…

As far as playability, It’s less an issue with movie files, especially 4k movies because the vast majority of 4k DV movies have HDR/HDR10 fallback (not all but usually).

But if your TV does support it and you’re using the new model 4k ATV, you’re right in that it should be able to play DV files.

A good test would be to play it on your TV with Infuse.

Curious, if it’s just for OTA how come plex? Understood if you were running a media server but there are dedicated OTA front ends that would serve you better AND simpler because that’s all it does as opposed to using a media server solution with OTA.

Also I dont know that “auto adjust quality” is relevant to OTA? It might be, but I thought that was just for hosted files. Even with that, I wouldn’t advise using it (no offense to anyone).
