We have plex for FreeBSD for intel, but there is a real desire and need for plex to be compiled for the arm architecture. This will allow us to run plex on a raspberry pi, or an orange pi, both which we can with debian/ubuntu. It would be nice to be able to run them on freebsd instead of having to run linux just for plex server. Thank you
I’m a fan of BSD in general, and FreeBSD specifically; but I’m curious, is there something else you’ll be doing on your Pi at the same time which requires FreeBSD? Why not just run one of the supported operating systems and call it good? Being a good Plex server for a Pi is pretty much going to be a full-time job.
For the record, I’d like to see all applications available on FreeBSD on all supported architectures. But as a practical matter, I’d prefer Plex spend their time elsewhere.
That’s fair, and I don’t disagree. As I said, I’d like to see all apps on available on all available architectures. But running a Pi as a media server is a fairly dedicated task. Doing it on FreeBSD is very niche.
Personally, I’d place (native, not scripted) hardware accelerated transcoding far above this on the list of features to be implemented for the Pi (on Linux). Don’t get me wrong, I’m a big fan of BSD. I’d just like to see a fully-featured implementation on a supported architecture than another partial implementation on another.
And also, I didn’t mean to derail this conversation. The request has merit and I’d like to see it implemented, too.
