Plex for LG 4k dolby vision "glitch"

So until yesterday (when I tried to prove a point why we needed to build an HTPC for 4k content to my partner) 4k content on my TV via the internal plex app never worked, and now it does… With dolby vision! I was annoyed and happy at the same time, cause while it made a fool of me, it was very convenient…

Anyway, onto the glitch. So it was playing Aquaman amazingly with dolby vision, it looked fantastic however on some scenes it did create a graphical glitch. You can see in the picture linked. This happens at the exact same time in the movie, every time on plex or xplay. If I play the same movie on the plex client on my PC and use my TV as the display, it doesn’t happen. It only happens when playing via the internal apps on the TV.

Any ideas how I could resolve this? Is this a limitation of my TV? Or could a plex update possibly fix this? If not, is it possible to passthrough dolby vision from my PC to my TV?

I was able to reproduce this on my LG TV without Plex. It occurred at that same time and the pattern of the artifacts looks identical, but I used the TV’s built in media player.

So it might not be a Plex issue. Might be some quirk between the TV’s decoding hardware and the data in that specific movie.

wild guess is that your tv is 100mbit ethernet, and 4k/hdr rips can exceed that limit.

since there isn’t like enough buffer in the tv decoder, it essentially becomes video version of ‘clipping’ (ie when audio is recorded too far into the red).

if you have good wifi it might be possible to avoid the artifacts, but that entirely depends on your wifi network and signal/interference.

wifi isn’t as consistent speed, and depending on how close other competing wifi is in range, will further reduce throughput.

but it might be good enough, enough of the time.

I forgot to specify, I was playing from USB so it’s probably not a network issue.

What model TV do you have? is it the same as mine or a different mode?

I have tried on 5ghz WiFi (router in same room) and on USB as well now… Same issue persists at the exact same spot :frowning: It could very well be the TV. I’ve tried turning off some post processing settings too but it still happens… Frustrating!

I have a different model but it’s likely many LG TVs share the same hardware and software for the “smart” stuff.

if the network wasn’t the issue, then it seems apparent that the original encode has video bitrate (or complexity) peaks that exceed what your tv is capable of.

the nvidia shield + atmos receiver + 4k/hdr tv is still the best/simplest way to get the full 4k experience (well without dolby vision) without limits or complications from tvs with crappy insides and/or the inherent limits of ARC preventing HD audio.
