Plex player LG WebOS4: video shrinks to upper-left corner

Running current versions of Server on Windows 7, and PMP LG TV client. Last couple of days I’ve been having a big problem playing 4K rips… the video either starts, or arbirarily during the movie, to shrink to a small rectangle in upper-left corner of screen. Video is not intact, looks garbled.

I’ve turned off requiring or preferring secure connections. The server dashboard indicates the video is direct-playing. Is this a known issue, is there any advice to get it to stop doing this (or explain why it is)?

Any ideas? This is still happening to me, had to switch from Plex app to XPlay to watch Captain Marvel 4k, because this problem occurred again.

Happens to me too. Works fine if I switch to Roku but then I lose some other capabilities.

Bump, similar on Samsung Tablet 3.

Same. LG TV and Captain Marvel as well as a few others…

This has happened to me too. The thing is Xplay lags a bit and Plex has more options.

Yes. It has happened to me on a variety of movies, those above and Avengers (first movie), etc.
Agree with the XPlay assessment - never seen this issue on XPlay, but its feature set is less than the official client (chapter support, for instance).
Wish we could get the Plex guys to look into this, the Plex client works pretty well for 4K (except when this happens, then you’re kinda screwed).

the plex app on the lg store has not been updated since 2016?!

I think they have two upgrade paths - I think the app can download parts of the code (the UI, say) when it starts, and update some of its functionality. More base parts of the app still need a real update thru the LG store. I surmise this, but don’t know it to be true.

So you mean that the base app then downloads more data to update itself (which is fine) but still the plex app shouldnt be doing this anyway.

This happened to me last night, also on Captain Marvel. What I found was as it was defaulting to the TrueHD track it was transcoding the audio and I got the garbled screen in the top left. After playing about a bit I found that if I selected the AC3 5.1 track the movie plays fine.

I stream from a Synology NAS so low powered and I try to avoid it transcoding at all so I put it down to the transcoding causing it to mess up. I guess if others not using a low powered NAS as a server are getting this issue then it is not the power of my box. However, try selecting a different audio track and see if you still get the issue - it fixed it for me anyway.

Hope this helps.

I can confirm its the TrueHD track creating this issue. How can we send feedback to report this bug/error.?

If I switch from the TrueHD track to something else like an AC3 track, the issue is completely gone.

For context, this is what the issue looks like:

Also suffering from this issue!

I have the same issue and the same workaround (5.1 audio track)

I have also noticed that i get buffering for a second or so, randomly even then both treams are direct play (and there is no load on the plex server)

So annoying (yes using LG tV too)

Same here. Denon AVR-X3600H with LG C9.

any ideas if this is a brand new issue or if it’s been around for quite a while? I personally have only noticed it within the past few days! Surely an update to the Plex app on LG tv would fix this?
I can flawlessly play the files over DNLA on the LG tv!

It seems like an issue that sprung up within the past few days for me as well. Though, I do know there was a webOS operating system update my LG B8 received within the last few days as well. I wonder if this is where the issue is coming from. It seems like an odd coincidence otherwise.

It’s been longer than a few days. I noticed the issue first a few months ago, when I was playing Infinity War.

Just tried to play new Avengers: Endgame… main track is 7.1 TrueHD. Video shrank and garbled immediately on playback. Had to revert to stereo track to watch the movie.

Really wish we could get this fixed…
